I've always viewed policies that are added on to clubs or groups as fluff anyway. IMO it's just another little jingle they can use to add a bullet point to their list of benefits of being a member. More bullet points make people think, "Hey I'm getting a great deal here".

I'm glad I read this thread. Not for the reason of "I'll not join HOG again" but because if I ever had the notion waaay in the back of my mind that I'd be covered, I can now be spared the disapointment in the future.

I also have progressive...broke down on a sunday...progressive could not find a towing company that accepted them that was open on a sunday..I had to contact a towing company on my own(thank goodness my wife was able to call from our home and found a company for 150.00 CASH ONLY for the tow). The towing company promised to send me a receipt in the mail the very next day(after I gave the guy 20.00 tip).... Yes I knew this sounded fishy but three hours later I was in no mood for ANYTHING but to get towed and get home ..still waiting 2 weeks later for the receipt so I can submit it to progressive.....Progressive was not that helpful needless to say

I use Progressive (Drive) Insurance.
Roadside assistance is included for harley and touring models.
If your not included in the automatic roadside assistance I think it's only an additional $8 a year.
Check with your insurance company. They may offer something like this.

I got a flat by carefree AZ. I was about 300 miles from home. My front tube blew out right by a gas station( Lucky me). I'm glad it didn't blow out in the middle of the dam desert. Anyways I am insured by Farmers and I'm covered in any vehicle I drive, So I didn't have get that Formost motorcycle insur.(owned by Farmers Ins). I called them and they sent a tow. It was a flatbed and the operator used straps to hold the bike upright. Never had to pay a thing. (I did have to wait for 2 Hrs for the truck)

After I started this post I was curious about what a lot of other HOG members thought they get for road coverage when they join HOG. Besides the patch, pin and map book, most people think they have unlimited towing and some sort of trip insurance, roadside assistance, bike rental or hotel coverage. When I tell them what they are actually covered for they all think I'm lying until I show them in the HOG Membership Manual. I have no idea why people think they have more coverage than they actually do, but you would be amazed.

Try it yourself, ask the HOG members you ride with what kind of road coverage they think HOG provides them with. I think you'll be surprised, just remember to have the small HOG Membership Manual with you so you can show them what they are covered for - maybe even have the coverage highlighted in yellow, otherwise you will have an argument.

As a HOG member, I'm not a member for the towing. I have Road America, AAA Plus and Foremost insurance with towing. I can't figure out why a guy thats been riding HD for 45 years is just now complaining about lack of towing coverage with a HOG membership. Who did you have prior to your days as a HOG member? I would just go back to them, and not renew again if you're just there for the towing. There are lots of other companies that will be happy to rip you off. I was riding in Nevada last year when one of the older guys had a medical issue-he had more towing coverage than I do-but he was not covered by any of them because it was not a mechanical issue. We ended up sending him in an ambulance and ferrying his bike 50 miles to park it.

I called HOG Roadside Assistance and questioned them about this and they told me that I would need to upgrade to a HOG Ultra Package to get travel expense reimbursement coverage. After reading the coverage it says that the Ultra Package coverage only covers "mechanical breakdown as the result of a warranty covered component" or "your warranty covered motorcycle is disabled as the result of a collision".

.

It almost seems like fraud on Road Americas part if in fact they only cover bikes that are still under warranty but still take your renewal for that out of warranty bike.

I have the upgraded Road America plan which expires in June. My 2 year bike warranty is up then too. I guess I won't be re-newing if this is the case.

I guess it is a pretty good marketing plan on Road Americas part to only cover newer bikes in warranty as the chance of needing road service is a lot less then on an older bike.

After reading the coverage it says that the Ultra Package coverage only covers "mechanical breakdown as the result of a warranty covered component" or "your warranty covered motorcycle is disabled as the result of a collision". My bike being 3 years old isn't covered under warranty anymore so in reality any HOG package doesn't do anything for me besides offering $100 towards 1 tow per year, I told this to the lady I was talking to and she said that then it's about time that I upgraded to a new bike!! I think it's sorta expensive to buy a new bike just to get towing coverage!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so this thread got me to read the membership manual. The quote you include refers to the TRAVEL REIMBUERSEMENT FEATURE of the ultra package, not the towing. I suggest YOU read the fine print. The disclosure of the $100 limit included with HOG membership is highlighted in heavy print. It doesnt look like it is hidden in the contract.

It was cheaper for me just to have a local guy tow my bike. The nearest dealership made a good recommendation, and I wasnt disappointed. He actually gave me almost half my money back when we got to the dealership.

Most have multiple coverage

If you think about it, HOG membership has many features we can use on a regular basis as well. Our local dealership gives a 10% discount on parts and labor. That worked out to a 60 dollar savings when I put the Power Commander on and had the Dyno tweaked. Not to mention all of the way cool bling you can buy at a discount as well.
If you figure your personal insurance with roadhazard coverage in with your HOG membership as well as the bonus for having extended warranty coverage, it might be a hassle to send the bills everywhere but I think you will be surprised how much coverage you really have.
HOG membership is not a bad thing really.....

You know, honestly that is about the same as any other roadside coverage. it will only cover the first $50 or $100. Well, if you are some where out in god forsaken west Nebraska, its 100 bucks just for a tow truck to show up. IMO this is the benifit of pack riding.

I am a hog member, but just because it came with the bike, I know how many miles I put on my first harley, I bought her with 53k and she now sits on 82k, my new bike had 2200 and how has 4800, I dont need to swipe a card to get a brag patch. I dont even really consider 30k miles that high.

But any way, about the only handy thing I think come with the membership is the map that has the dealerships in it. Other than that, maybe I havnt explored the benifits, but I really havnt found anything that usefull.

Someone said AAA RV earlier. I have Allstate RV which is about the same coverage for much cheaper. I believe it's around $80/year.

I suppose you could always try this.....just a little humor....made laugh when I read it.....

http://groups.msn.com/HarleyTechTalk...37415176995769

But on the serious side.....here you might try this:

http://www.mts-towing.com/default.asp

When you call you can actually speak to the owner of this company.....seems pretty reasonable....

I have the AAA plus RV and love it. My daughter was having car problems and broke down a few times. I just met her where she was and they towed it on down the road. I ended up using all 4 tows the first year. I love this towing service. Even though I haven't yet used it for the bike. If you read what they cover it's real good service.
