ABC's of Touring Point from Mexico
On my ride around the "rim" ( www.ridingtherim.com) I will be following the TX - Mexican boarder and would like to jump over to Mexico just long enough to get a point photo for the ABC's of Touring. My question to those who have crossed into Mexico. Should I go ahead and get MC insurance for this brief (20 minutes or less) jaunt across the boarder. What is a good place to cross ( minimal hassle from the locals and boarder related issues.)?

All that is required for the point is a picture of:
- Your bike
- This year's Hog Tails
- The offical sign.
Therefore, you only need to go to a border crossing and get the picture. You will not need to actually go into Mexico. I have gotten the "Mexico" point several years and have never crossed the border. I would not drive my truck in Mexico - much less my bike.
Same picture routine with Canada - but Canada is no problem to drive in. Really great folks, roads, etc. I stop at the border and get the "Canada" sign, then go in and get a Province or two.

I drive Mexico all the time. Yes, be sure to get Mexican insurance, if you enter.

Passport fiasco
Don't forget the new passport requirement is going to make you have a passport to re-enter the US if you cross the border. I don't know when the effective date is but it not to far away. I strongly recomend everyone get their passports just in case they need to ever cross the border. It takes a few weeks to complete the process.

RGTerry,
I think you asked earlier about the road from El Paso to Columbus...
If that was you, that route will take you right past the Santa Teresa port of entry on the edge of El Paso. Crossing there is a no-brainer. It's really a commercial crossing; it's not really close to any residential areas. Crossing over and back would be a snap.

As an FYI, Passports are taking forever to receive (4 months with expidited service is not unusual). Even if you don't have plans to travel outside our borders I would strongly suggest you spent the $90 or so and get one. They are good for 10 years and this is money well spent. I won't be susprised if we are required to present a passport to fly within the US in the next 5 years. You are already required to present 2 forms of government ID (passport and Drivers Licence) to enter many military bases today.

Do you have to have your bike in the shot. Many tourists (shoppers), cross on foot and then get a taxi. Border towns are not what Mexico is all about, they are the scummiest place you can imagine.

Yes. To get the point, the picture must include your bike, the official sign, and a 2007 Hog Tails (or 2007 Enthusiast).
By the way, you must be in at least six of the photos. I carry a tri-pod for the camera and took my own pictures last year with me in the pictures.

Rocky's right. The Santa Teresa crossing is really easy and quick. That might be the one you want to visit for your photo. There are other bridges (3) before that one, but they are very crowded most of the time. If your traveling from East to West, the Avenue of the Americas (Zaragosa) Crossing isn't real bad, it depends on when you hit it. Might save you 30 miles or so.
