San Antonio Ride

I'm heading down to San Antonio in a few weeks. Never been there before. My brother and I are renting Harleys and would like suggestions for places to visit on our bikes. We welcome all suggestions.

Thanks

how much time ya got? - with a good day, of not sight seeing in SA, I'd head to Hill Country - there are three roads that make a triangle - the three 3's its called - 333, 335 and 337 I believe - goes through Lost Maples National Forest, and some of the best riding in Texas. - a bit of a ride out there, but once your there, its awesome.
If you need to stick closer - head out to Luckenbach - after all, everyone is someone there!
either way, you can't go wrong if you don't stick inside the city.
If you find yourself North of the city on 281, look up the shade tree bar - forget the town, but west of Canyon Lake area - very biker friendly, and host lots of events (and good burgers to boot)

Pretty close 335,336,and 337, twisted sisters run is great. Any of the back roads in the hill country will work...

Oh yea been there a few times. They have bike parking in the rear. After you leave there cut down RR473 and head to Comfort. Stop in Kendalia at the little store and depending on what day of the week it is they make a great lunch from the grill...

We're thinking about driving up the Buchanan Dam and coming back on 1431. Is this a scenic ride?

It can be if the weather has started to warm up. If not, I'd just stay on 29 out of Marble Falls (stop @ Blue Bonnet cafe for breakfast) and go over to 16 and cut back down towards Fredericksburg. You can detour and take the Willow City Loop and/or see Enchanted Rock park off of 16.

When you get to Fredericksburg, you can either walk around town and check out some of the microbreweries, head east towards 1376 and hit Luckenbach, or stay on 16 and go down to Medina (stop for some apple pie) and on into Bandera. 337 also intersects at Medina if you want to head west. The stretch of 337 between Medina and Leakey is consistently voted as the best road in the state by Ride Texas magazine.

You won't be short on good choices for riding in this neck of the woods

This is all great information. Thanks!

Another question - The rental place tells me that it is Texas law that renters have to wear helmets. Anyone know if this is true? He also said that Texas is very close (within a month or two) from mandating helmets for all motorcycle riders.http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/im...lies/spank.gif

Can anyone clear this up?

Are you renting from one of the Harley Dealerships? I'm not sure on the requirement to have rental riders wear helmets but it's a good idea, especially if you are in unfamiliar riding locations. Here's the link to the Texas law on helmets- http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/helmet.htm

I hadn't heard that the helmet law was about to go away. See if they can give you a source on that.

In order not to wear a helmet in Texas you are suppose to have the Helmet Exemption Sticker on your license plate. I'm sure none of the rental bikes have the sticker.

This is true but that law is not enforced anywhere within this part of Texas Hill Country. If you get pulled over for that, the police wanted to pull you over for something else and used that as their excuse.

I just got the sticker a few weeks ago just to be compliant with the law but I rode without a helmet all over and never even got a second look from John Q. Officer.

So IF I was to ditch the helmets where in the area could I store them safely overnight? Anyone aware of any large lockers in the area?
