VROD Muscle - Screw loose...how to fix?

Hi all--

I have a weird one, but hopefully someone can help me out...

I have a VRod Muscle, which has a 3 piece airbox cover, consisting of a main cover and 2 side panels. The 2 side panels are secured to the main cover with 10 screws (5 on each side).

The screws slide through holes on the side panels and into threaded holes on the main cover. As it turns out, the main cover is made of some kind of molded hard plastic (not metal), and the threaded holes are actually metal "sleeves", made of brass (?) and bonded to the plastic.

Hopefully this is clear--if not, think of it like a drywall anchor...

Anyway, I had unscrewed one of the screws and was trying to screw it it back in, and the sleeve broke free from the plastic...so as I turn the screw, both the screw and the sleeve would just spin.

To use the drywall anchor analogy again...imagine that the hole in the drywall is slightly too big, and the anchor is still in there, but it does not attach to the drywall any more...

There's nothing holding the sleeve in place any more, whatever bond existed between the plastic and the brass has broken, so now, when you turn the screw, the screw turns the sleeve, and they both just spin around together, forever.

Obviously, this is a problem...I need to bond the sleeve and the plastic of the cover together again, so that I can screw the screw in and unscrew it, too, when I need to.

Can anyone recommend a solution? I know there are epoxies that can bond metal to plastic, but I'm worried about the strength of those bonds...what should I use, and will it hold up to the wear and tear that a bike goes through?

My only other option, I think, is to replace the airbox cover. I would really really hate to do that just for 1 screw.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance everyone!

The correct term for the part you are describing is a "nutsert."
I do not know what the size is that you have, but the nutserts on the "batwing" of the baggers have the same issue. There is a kit out that replaces the nutsert with a slightly larger diameter nutsert with the same thread pitch inside. The bolt on the bagger is a 1/4 with 20 threads per inch. (I have read that there is an item that can be found at Lowes, and used in furniture building, that you can use that is pretty much the same thing that Harley sells as a repair kit. MUCH cheaper)
You could try using JB Weld, Gorrilla glue, or something similar to hold the existing nutsert in place.

JB weld makes a plastic epoxy hame depot carrys it.best if you can pull the insert out and get the epoxy on the outside of the insert.let it dry and good to go just dont tighten too tight. You could also try melting the plastic a little around the head if it wont come out with a soldering iron as well but dont know if it will hold.
