Kuryakyn Switchblades

Photos of new Switchblades. So far quite pleased with them. Comfortable and well made. I was concerned about my heal falling off the L shaped sturrip, but so far so good.

Now we just gotta figure out what do for the passengers. I ordered a set of the Kuryakin extensions, but they won't get here before I take off on the two week trip....

Engine Guard

V-Fred and Daniii,

I've been thinking of getting a set of engine guards and just put them on for long trips so I can take advantage of highway pegs. Therefore, I am curious how easy they are to remove. For the bottom portion (by the footpegs) it looks in V-Fred's picture like it's just a matter of removing one bolt. However, is the clamp by the footpegs something that you made, or does it come standard.

Also, do you have a set of highway pegs mounted? If so, how do you like them and which ones did you use (all the mounting kits on the HD site say they don't fit the V-Rod engine guard??)? Finally, did you end up having to buy a peg extension kit, or is the riding position okay when mounting the pegs right to the engine guard?

Thanks.

Craig

The guards are easy to install. They slip over the frame mounts for the pegs and attach at the top with two bolts that thread into holes made for them. Piece of cake to install. The only problem I had was figuring out how to remove the raidiator shrouds. (see my post under V-Freds V-Rod about what I think of the value of engine quards)

As for highway pegs, I am interested too in why HD says that they cannot be used on the VRSC guards (I assumed diameter of the tubes). However, I see many of us have them. Daniii may know.

After putting 300 miles on the Switchblades, I have the following review.

They are very comfortable, as are any larger flat pegs. I find that due to the pipes your right foot tends to rest naturally more to the outside of the right peg than the left. The ridge on the outside of the peg rests on the bottom of my sole (I am only size 9 medium). This creates no real problem as you do not feel the ridge anly more than the caps on the ends of the stock pegs, but makes me wish that the pegs were either wider or mounted further out . The 1 1/2 inch peg exender probably would put them out too far for the controls... anyone tried it?

The sturrips work OK, the heal of my boot fits in the small rest area naturally, but because of the fact that I know it is small, I still tend to be concerned about being securely on the rest. I am sure that this feeling will disappear in time with familiarity with the setup. There is a very slight spring to the rests that you would not experience with a typical sturrip, and you certianly would not want to put any weight on them or you would lever the peg adjustment.

Extended, the sturrips will drag in low speed manuvers, best to use them on the highway as they are desiged. Very easy to fold and unfold. The metal peg tensioner needs to be bent more when you install the Switchblades, and placed on the top, rather than the bottom of the mount. The male mounts seem slightly thinner than the stock pegs. Even with the bend increased the pegs still are somewhat more loose as a result. They fold very easily.

There is a small ball on bottom of the sturrip that acts both as a means of opening the blades and protects the pegs from cosmetic damage in leans. You will scrape them in corners, but so will other pegs.

Would I buy them again? Yes. They are comfortable and well built and I like the fact that you can fold them away. If regular sturrips scrape as much as these do (when extended) in low speed manuvers and agressive leans, they would come off immediately. Too disconcerting. For the hyway these work just fine. A good product, and Kuyakyn's best seller according to their customer service rep.

I checked them out at Strugis. The guy I spoke with did not recomend them for me. He said they would be undergoing a design change in the near future. He said that they just were to new and having some problems. He recomended the ISO pegs to me.

For what ever it is worth

V-Fred, thanks for the post. Also, why did you have to remove the rad shrouds?

Anyone else know what highway peg mounting kit works with our engine guards, or why HD says none of their mounting kits work?

fehrc: Good question, I do not remember why I did. Could have been to mount the upper bracket, or else I did it by mistake. Threw away the installation instructions.
