Unhappy misfire

I have a 2003 anniversary edition edition v-rod with a bad misfire between 3&4000 revs in any gear, the rest of the range is ok.Do any of you know what's causing it,and what's the remedy, the dealer says a new ecm,but thats an expensive option.:

Did the dealer have the bike hooked up to test equipment? If not, go to a different dealer. They should never try to diagnose something like that just from hearing your description. It hey did have it hooked up to their all knowing machine, then you prolly need a new ECM.

Check to see that your plug wires are secure.

That's crazy talk. How many miles do you have on it? What modifications have you done to it? Are you using a PCIII or Pulse Width Modulator for fuel management? If so, remove it, and try to run the bike for a short time.

Check the spark plug gap. Check the Coil contact to the sparkplugs. Check the codes.

I just had this problem fixed for free by HD. My '03 started missing between 3000 and4000 rpm. Read on the forums that it was a fuel tank flange issue. Downloaded the Harley service paper and called both local dealerships, which both said my ser# wasn't on recall. Read some more and everything pointed to fuel flange. Called HD factory service and they said mine could be on recall. Took it to one of the local dealerships and they got on horn w/factory. It was covered and now my bike is awesome again. Don't give up!

If it is a fuel flange, which is common on early V-Rods, then the miss should be noticable under hard accelleration when the demand for fuel goes up. It should be easily repeatable, and not as bad under steady cruising. However, it won't have any "pickup" what so ever.
