changing bars: 04 RK Custom

Okay folks. I've decided which bars will replace these awful beach bars. I also purchased the service manual. Instructions look pretty straight forward. My questions:

I'm concerned about removing the grips, other gear mounted on the bars. Is it difficult?

What tools do I need?

Thanks for your help. I know quite a few of you already replaced yours.

Use the HD service manual here.

Be especially careful tightening the small Torex screws that hold the clutch and brake lever clamps on. There are 25mm and 27 mm ones. The little ones need VERY low torque and will strip easily. You need a low-range inch pound torque wrench to do this part right. Don't ask how I know!

Also, be sure to block the front brake lever (you can use the fat end of a medium tiewrap) to prevent damage to the front brake light switch. They are a b***h to replace.

If the left-hand grip was installed correctly (glued on) you will probably need to cut it off. Your HD Parts guy (or gal!) can order just the left one for you if they get a part # from the kit breakdown from HD Online using the whole handgrip kit part #.

As for the left hand grip. Another suggestion instead of cutting it off. Soak that sucker in hot water (I mean the hottest you can get out of the tap). The temperature will cause the glue to loosen and you can then just wiggle the grip off. I have done this twice on my old bike with no damage to either the grip or the bars.

Put a folded towel or something thick over the front fender and tank.....TRUST ME....

Oh... and tell me when your tossing the beach bars, I know someone who wants to try em out.

I recall that someone else on this forum suggested a blow-dryer, too.
