Removing console from a 2001 RKC

I have scoured my service manual and searched the HD forums but I haven’t been able to find any directions to remove the console from my 2001 RKC. I need to do some touch-up work to just the console and I would rather do the work with it off of the tank.

Is it as easy as removing the console nut and console screw?
If so, what about separating the speedo from the console? I’m hoping to not have to unplug anything, ideally by removing the speedo from the console and leave it on the bike while the console is off.

Any gotchas or trap doors to watch out for?

Thanks!!!!

Page 8-75 in the 2001 Touring service manual has steps to remove the speedo from a FLHR/C.
Obviously one if the steps is to unbolt the instrument console from the gas tank. That is achieved by removing the acorn nut and the philips screw.

Once the instrument console is unbolted from the gas tank, flip it over and you will see what electrical connectors need to be disconnected.
If my memory is correct, I believe there are 3 connectors..speedo, indicator lights, and ignition switch.
In addition, I believe you have to remove the trip odometer reset switch from the console.

Thats basically it, not difficult to do.

The speedo will come off with the console. If you need to remove it from the console, the lock ring on the back side of the speedo needs to be removed, and then the speedo can be lifted out from the top side of the console.

Just be sure to note routing of cables and wires, so that when you reinstall them you do not pinch them when installing the console back on the gas tank.
There are some flexible clips that help hold the cables in place..be sure to use them.

I thought about making a center console out of Teak, but on reflection figured it would look like cr@p.
