EGlide Wind Deflector
Im wanting to get a new windshield to replace my standard 12 in windshield....im wondering what people thing of the 4 inch black...is this practical at all and does it block wind or do you get hit right in the face? Would the 6 inch smoked be better practicality wise?

Assuming you're talking about an Electra Glide windshield...
Unless you have a really short upper torso, the 4 inch black would not be practical.....will not block wind, but looks cool.
I'm 5'11". I wouldn't go any shorter than 8" if you want the windshield to send air up and over you. I have an 8" and think I would actually prefer 10" for city ridin', just high enough where I could barely see over it. When touring on highway, I actually prefer the stock 12" shield and have been thinking of picking up a 15" unit. Looking thru the shield doesn't really bother me.

Like OldBoy99 I'm 5'11", but of course the upper torso height is the telling factor. I went with a 10" Tinted windshield. I prefer to just look over the shield especially at night when looking through the upper 1" or so of the OEM windshield it seemed to distort things, and have more glare from headlights, which would get worse as the shield gets older, and worse yet if you were to add a rainy night!
I love the look of the 4" black shield but it would be next to useless for deflecting most of the wind and bugs!

Hi!
I am 5"8" and have been using the 4" black windshield for 2 years and love it! I rode in December with out much problem. It will push most of the wind up over your head. Only the really big bugs will get thru to hit you. I have been zapped a few times at 70+ and it’s like getting hit with a bullet.
Having said that, it also is a lot better in the really hot weather as you do get more airflow. With the stock windshield you get a lot more hot air from the engine. You also get to hear better as it does not seem to reflect as much engine noise back at you. I also have the docking kit so I can remove the trunk, with the short windshield and no trunk I do not have any trouble with cross winds nor do I get blown around as much by passing trucks on the highway.
Ride safe!

I'm 5'10" and have both a 4" and 8". I use the 4" in the heat of the Summer when I am at a bike meet, the rest of the time I love the 8". Gives me a little break from the wind and I am looking completely over the shield, no chance of distortion I get from a taller shield.

Get the 8" from J&P. Costs about 50 bucks including shipping. Use the 4" black when you want to show off like at bike gatherings. But remember, the 4" will give you a face full of wind and bugs.

I'm 5' 9", and I have the four inch black which is my main windshield in the summer. The wind is largely deflected up and over my head. Even my hat doesn't blow off (usually).

4" Black windscreen
I've got a 4" black windscreen and the other guys are right saying a lot more air is moving over you.....however, the added wind noise makes it harder to enjoy the tunes from your stereo system.......I used it for a 600 mile trip last summer and haven't used it since...I've got an 8" lightly smoked now....H-D now makes a smoked translucsent (sp) that is 6" tall.....I'd check into that one. It's standard on the new SE E-Glides.

I have the HD smoked 6" and I would not go any shorter than that. I would like it to be a bit taller.

I have the 4" black and used it for a couple years. Now it sits in my garage and will probably never get put on again. Like it has already been mentioned, it makes it much harder to hear your stereo over the wind noise. When I put a stereo in my FLHT, I sentenced the 4" shield to the scrap heap. I took a trip with the stock windshield, I had cut down to 9" and have never gone back. I found other ways to make it look cool.
BTW...I'm 6 feet tall...but have only a 30" inseam...so I'm quite tall through the upper body and easily see over the 9" shield.

I am running a 5" Dark Smoke Cee Bailey windshield & I love it, but I am only 5'6" & have a low profile Corbin seat.
I can hear my tunes or talk radio just fine at 85 mph, but I have a 150 watt RMS per channel Alpine AMP & four 6.5" Sony X-Plod speakers.........

Question(it's a stoopid one but here goes): When you folks talk about the windshield height(6", 8", etc.), is this the measured height of the windshield from where it comes out of the fairing or the total height(including what is in fairing that holds it in place)?

The height where it comes out of the fairing.

I removed the stock height windshield off my 2004 Classic after 9000 miles to try one 2.5 inches shorter. Reason being that I had to streach to look over the top, can't see through the windshield in the rain. It's only been on for a day or two and I can tell tha after I get used to it it will be better. I do prefer looking over the top rather than through the plastic, except in hard daytime rain when I tuck in. The only other difference I noticed was that I got mor buffeting from the wind at the top of my head (5'11" tall).
