Morrisey wants to know Dino or Syn?
Tires, 2009-2013 Touring

I know there are plenty of tire threads, but this is a very specific question for owners of 2009-2013 touring bikes, as they have their own specific handling characteristics: for those of you who have run Commander IIs and American Elites both ... which do you prefer and why.

Not interested in Metzeler. My experience with those is that the Brazilian quality-control inspectors must phone their work in.

Thanks!
Tom

American Elites......great handling....good wear (maintained correctly).....great tire....highly recommended....you couldn't give me a Metzeler.

I think you should reevaluate Metzeler. I have a 2009 Electra Glide and have tried most tires that fit. I have the best results with Metzeler ME 888. I get the best mileage and traction with these. If you are completely against Metzeler I would recommend Dunlop D407T

Here's some stats I have collected:

I usually buy my tires on the internet for the best price and have them mounted locally after I remove the wheel from the cycle.

I prefer whitewall.

Every year I go on a trip of about 6000 or 7000 miles. Sometimes I end up replacing the tire before it's worn out because I don't want the tire to wear out in the middle of my trip.

I had American Elites on my 2012 Road Glide and I thought they had a harsh ride. I am on my second set of Michelin Commander 2 tires and I am happy with them. They have good durability and handling.

2011 FLHTK

Michelin Commander II - not bad handling except wet roads, good mileage

Dunlop American Elites - good handling, even on wet roads, same or better mileage as MCII

Dunlop D408F (front) - follows road snakes, poor mileage

I will stick with the American Elites for this bike.

I have no complaints on the American Elites. They handle well, wet or dry, and tread wear is more than reasonable.

I have over 20K miles on the set I'm running and prolly will get to 24-25K before I replace them.

I got 11K miles on my factory Dunlops before I replaced them at 7 years of age. They had more tread left, but I felt 7 years was enough. No issues with these tires on any type of dry pavement.

I am now running the American Elites in 18" front and rear and they feel great. It was a pretty easy decision actually.

My $0.02.

I tried a Commander 2 on my last ride and I'll never run them again only because of the wet, or lack there of, traction while cornering. I ride in all weather, so traction takes precedence over mileage. I've been told Commander 2's get the most mileage, but I'll look elsewhere.

Not sure how they work on a touring bike but the Avon's I have on my softails have proven themselves. Average about 13-14 thou on the rear. Not as stiff a ride as the stock Dunlop's. On my 2nd pair and still happy with them. Just picked up an 08 heritage with the stock Dunlops but the rear tire is just about done. That was the 2nd tire in 18,000 miles. Will switch when I need to change.

Show pics of the new 08 Heritage please. I will have to look at the Avon's at DK. What pressure are you running? Thanks.

Hey Cap, I'll try and snap a couple pic's later today. As for pressure I run 34-36 front and 36-40 in the rear depending if I'm riding solo or to up. My 98 heritage has the older Avon Venom X but now Avon has renamed them Cobras but basically have almost the same tread pattern.

Replaced the rear tire on my 04 flhti at 10,000 and it only lasted about 7000 miles. I'm 165 lbs, always ride solo with saddlebags only, no tour pak. So it's not like they were overloaded.

At 17,000 I replaced both with american elites. They now have a little about 8000 miles on them and even the rear doesn't look like it's worn much. Great traction, even when wet.

My son had Commander IIs on his sporty and hated them on wet pavement.

Argh I'm jealous me matey. I have a pic of the red one on file. Did you know white walls makes the bike faster, but slower at wash time?
I wish I could live up thataway, but the cost of living is too much for me. I lived in Portland for a while and couldn't wait to get back to NC.
