Angry Beware S&S Head Pipes

About three years ago I put on S&S Power Tune Dual headers and Reinhart Mufflers.

Recently while tracking down an annoying oil leak, I noticed that two of the 1/4" bolts holding the horseshoe bracket for the crossover pipe were completely gone and the remaining two had dropped done and were resting on top of the crossover pipe.

It gets worse.

Closer inspection revealed that all four of the bracket mounting bolts have sheared off up inside the tranny case. Fn lovely.

It looks like S&S has since changed abandoned the cheesy mounts that came with my headers but now I'm stuck with a mess (read $$$$)

If you have the same setup I do, you'd be wise to check it.

Signed,

Pissed in Pompano

Did you contact them in a polite way and ask if they can help? They might at least send you the newer hardware. If they tell to to f' off, then I can understand being pissed.

When I originally saw the problem I contacted S&S for replacement bolts and a new clamp, thinking I might get off that easy.

They told me I had to get any parts from DS Manufacturing but gave no contact info for them. Had to look it up on the web. Apparently, S&S doesn't make their own exhaust components.

The new parts will not retro to the earlier models. Have to buy a whole new set of pipes.

But the big issue is the busted bolts in my tranny case. That, they cannot fix.

Well, then it sucks all around.

This page suggests that they are a wonderful company who couldn't possibly shaft any customers. http://www.dsmfg.com/careers

Broken bolts in the case they can not control, but they should help you fix the rest of the problems, unless they are not a good company.

cwilks is reading this now saying WTF is this? cwilks is reading this now saying WTF is this?
so devils advocate here....how could a company warranty parts that the customer installed not knowing if they were installed correctly...tightened down sufficiently or maintained correctly? Parts loosen up on Harley's everyday.....at what point does responsibility fall on the installer or owner?

Jus sayin.

Wrong company. Not D&S Manufacturing but DS Manufacturing. I made the same mistake trying to find them. www.dsmfgmn.com
FYI they make Krome Werks exhaust equipment too. At least some of it.

cwilks, pretty much standard warranty on bolt on after market accessories is limited to defects in materials and/or workmanship. But the point of this whole exercise is to let other guys that may have the same product check to see that they don't run into the same problem.

Having said that, the mounting system for the crossover pipe is pretty crappy. Asking 4 - 1/4" bolts (oil pan bolts no less) to carry that much weight is not a good idea, Proof is evidenced by the fact that they changed the design. My guess is the change came after complaints similar to mine.

My mistake was relying on S&S's reputation for producing quality products.

you hit the nail on the head, this is a Harley we are talking about and I know a lot of people that like to do their own maintenance and when I say maintenance its WOW I maintain my own bike and just changed all 3 holes

UHHHHH NO!!!! maintenance is going over a list of fasteners and checking the torque on them furthermore that amount of people that DONT OWN a torque wrench and a few tubes of different color lock tight astound me on the forums unfortunately all it takes is one or 2 to get lose and then that constant vibration will shear off the rest of the bolts

Hi Grasshopper,

We saw your post about the failure of the bolts in your exhaust bracket. At S&S we have now brought exhaust manufacturing in-house, making products that are 100% designed, developed and tested in our USA facilities. We are proud of everything we make and firmly believe that our new products will provide a better experience. We value your business and it is important to us that you can count on our team to build quality parts. While it sounds like the warranty on that system has long expired, please DM us so that we can figure out how best to support you, because no one likes having a broken bike.

Did everyone miss the part where he contacted them and was told it wasn't there product and to contact the former contractor?

It might just be that the negative attention on this forum is the only reason they are now willing to entertain any kind of solution.

I hope the S&S rep. on these forums has a word with whomever told grasshopper to shove it and try the contracted manufacturer.
