Ragman46 wants to know Dino or Syn?
Miles and upgrades...

.. still looking for my Street Glide.

Cant find anything in my $$ range at a dealer so Ive been looking at private owners as well.

I have my eyes on a 2011 103 totally stock with 1200 miles for about 15K and also looking at a 2012 103 with stage 1, pipes and some other upgrades with 10K miles for a little less.

My question is, would most of you prefer a stock bike with really low miles over a bike with upgrades but with more miles?

Im going back and forth on this one because if I buy the stock bike with low miles, Im probably going to want to purchase at least the stage 1 with pipes and PC.

Any advice or input is appreciated. Thanks.

If the work on the 2012 is documented, that is where I would spend my money. I don't recall any real differences between the two years (but I wasn't looking as SG when I was shopping so I could be mistaken).

Documented as in done by a known dealer or indy shop! Way too many butchers out there and then you spend your time like I am cleaning up their mess and realizing why they got rid of it.

I'd probably lean towards the stock machine, especially if it had all the service work up to date.

1200 miles is change three fluids, make sure everything is tight, check clutch and brake fluid levels. That could, and has been, screwed up before too. I don't see much difference between the two as far as what we know about the maintenance.

I do my own maintenance, does that make my bike less desirable than if I paid a dealership to do it?

Go with the stock one.
This way you know where you started.

That would be my choice as well. I think $15K is a little steep for a 2011 but with only 1,200 miles might not be such a bad deal.

Are you a hack or do you do things the right way? I've had both when buying but mostly hacked crap, so in my opinion (for my money), yes I would steer clear of your machine unless you could show me that you are capable and did things the right way (a fairly simple task actually). If things were done the right way on my current Harley, I would be riding now not continuing to find $hit the previous idiot hacked together. It will be decent when I'm done, but probably never right again as some of the parts probably won't get replaced.

My Buell was a sorry hot mess when I got it, runs great now.

I keep records, have the manual, even receipts for the extra tools I bought (like an inch-pound torque wrench). I am sure there are lots of hacks out there, dealerships included. 1200 or 12000 miles doesn't mean to much to me for those years.

If the parts that were added to the 2012 are what the OP was going to add anyway, great. If not, he can take them off and swap or sell them to help with the desired parts.

Hopefully Ragman46 knows what to look for when inspecting a used bike or has someone he trusts that does.

Ragman, enjoy whichever you choose.

Safe rides...

I would prefer stock with low miles. You said you would probably do stage 1, etc.
Maybe you would be happy with stock bike and not spend the extra $ on it.

Stock. You'll prefer knowing exactly everything that's been done to the bike. Yeah, maybe if the Stage 1 bike was done at the dealer and has paperwork, sure, you can do that, but I would still go with stock, lower or higher miles. That's my preference. Like others have said, you could fall into picking up someone else's problems.

I'd buy stock, it will have a better chance at having low miles and not having some butcher playing home mechanic on it. It doesn't take very long reading forums to learn, there are a lot of back yard hacks in this world vs true craftsman.
