I added the 2nd horn that mounts in the front fairing. Together with the stock horn it sounds like a car's two-tone. No louder than a regular car horn, but if another driver thinks a car is in their way they might think twice. My idea anyway.

Have you heard it side by side with the Mini Beast? What's the comparison?

I am just kind of irked that the HD ones keep failing - this is my 3rd so I was thinking about changing to the Mini Beast.

Thanks

I installed the HD Premium horn on my 08 Ultra Classic last weekend. The wiring was a challenge and just barely long enough. There is a polarity when connecting the horn, so if you put the final connections for the horn on the wrong terminals, it won't sound right. Switching the terminals will take care of it. GREAT Sound !! I'm very happy with it.

Quick follow up. I took the bike to the dealer this AM for the horn. Turns out the inline fuse was blown - apparently that was the problem the last time too - I had the 35,000 service done then and just assumed they had changed the whole horn out that time as well. They changed the fuse and I was off - the fuse blew again on the way home and when I got home I did some testing and found that where they spliced into the original horn wiring the wire was split and I guess it was shorting out.

I respliced the wire and the horn sounds better and will blow longer (it would blow the fuse after 1 to 2 seconds before)

Also when I took the horn off it looks like it is the Stebel Nautilus with a different shroud. Who knows. I do think the $50+ bucks for the harness is a bit much but hey thats HD parts for ya!

Anyway I wanted to let everyone know that it is OK and what the problem was.

Have a great one and ride safe

I'm pretty sure that's just the Steibel horn chromed up and a HD logo on it. Mine (the steibel) came with a wiring kit/diagram that used a relay, which i wired up. It said that the stock wiring isn't stout enough to run the horn w/o the relay. That's probably why you were using the fuses up. You may want to check out this link.

hope this helps.

The Harley horn does have the relay with the harness that is $50+ - that is actually where the fuse was that was blowing - it is inline near the battery connection.

The fuses were popping from the splice not being secure.

I bet it is the Stebel - alot of HD parts are other stuff rebranded LOL. I was just saying that it is king of crazy for Harley to charge that much for the harness when I believe it comes with the Stebel horns.

Also, does anyone know which fuse came stock with the Harley harness? was it a 15amp? The reason I ask is that the Stebel seems to use a 20 or 30AMP fuse with the harnesses.

The loud horns Metalarts makes not only are loud(130dbls) but look great.
American make, these well built units are easily installed with stock wiring and only take a few minutes for installation.

go to website for all the info. www.metalartsinc.com

Consider this another vote for the mini-beast. I put one on day before yesterday. Took about 30 minutes, including the time to read through the instructions -- which to be honest are barely necessary, it's a real easy install.

Sound is excellent. Louder than most cars, not as loud as a semi.

That was TOO funny! See they have a lot of videos. Must have watched 5 of them, while people crapped their pants! Wish I could mount one of those puppies on my Road King!

I'm also looking for something louder, but don't want to go with the air horn set up (just a personal preference). I just replaced my "cowbell" cover with the "Air wing horn cover", but have retained the original OEM horn - which really blows (no pun intended). I was looking at the Fiamm Road Thunder Horn, which is a straight out louder replacement for stock motorcycle horns. It puts out 134dB @ 4" (108 dB @ 2Meters), and claims to exceeds industry specs for loudness.

Anyone have one of these, or any other suggestions / recommendations for a straight out replacement horn that will fit? Just curious. Many thanks and RIDE SAFE.

Mike

I ordered the Stebel Nautilus, and it came with a mounting bolt and a relay. Not wanting to pay an extra 30 bucks for a "plug and play" wiring kit, I did it myself in about 2 hours. The horn sits where the cowbell did and the current goes thru the relay.

Oh, and by the way, it is LOUD! I'm really happy with the sound and the volume of the sound. Much better than stock.

It's basically a plastic horn body over the metal compressor; I paid ten bucks extra for the "chrome" model, which is a pair of chromed plastic caps over the black round ends. I hope they don't fall off. We'll see how long the plating lasts. But wattya want for 50 bucks?

Horn Alternatives

After putting up with poor horns on Harleys for years we found better alternatives.. loud and reliable.
