What's this thing?

Picked up my 02 RC on Saturday.

This is a massive adjustment for me.....my last bike was a Yamaha R1. Initial impressions....the hog is alive and full of character and soul but boy is it big and heavy. On the left side of the bike just below and to the rear of the front seat is a plastic assembly.

It is connected to a cable and the plastic inner part of the assembly can be pulled outwards. It feels like some kind of release mechanism but I don't know what it releases. I suspect it might be the seat but that doesnt appear to loosen up when the mechanism is pulled.

On another topic as there is no rev counter I am frightened of over reving and causing some damage. Anybody got any tips as to how hard I dare rev it? It has non standard pipes on it. How can I tell if it has been remapped to compensate?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bill

Does it have a backrest? It sounds like an adjustable back rest by your description. Is it flat on the face with a sort of long oval shape to it? If you have a backrest, pull the lever while pushing back on the back rest and see if it moves.

As far as mapping goes.....the only way to tell for sure is to put it on the dyno and get an air/fuel reading.

It's a lever for an adjustable backrest.

Thanks guys

That makes sense. It came equipped with a front-seat back rest but the rest was leaning too far forward to be comfortable.
I'll try it tomorrow and report back. I hope you're right as it will solve a problem.

A remap is not needed if just the mufflers have been replaced. If you have a free flow air cleaner (K&N type) and is running well it very likely has been remapped. Watch for symptoms of a rich or lean condition and use that a your guide as to the air/fuel mixture. If a stage 1 (or stage II) map has been installed it will raise your rev limit. I think to around 6300 RPM.
Congrats on the King. The more you ride it the more you'll love it!

Yes you were correct. It allows the back-rest to recline slightly. Did a 100 miles today with the backrest fitted properly.....I love it and you're right the more I ride it the more I love it. Sort of relaxed and unhurried, I didn't want to come home...just wanted to keep riding but the weather looked grim.

Thanks guys

rev limiter

All late model flh's have a rev limiter. you can rev it to 5000 something rpm's and you will know when it kicks in. Actually i believe ALL harleys made now days have a rev limiter.

Yup, you'll feel it if you hit the rev limiter, won't hurt nothing. It'll feel like you're running out of gas all of a sudden (you're really just running out of spark).

I have friends who swear by their Jhap bikes. Not being critical, they just miss the soul. There is just something about a Harley that can't be explained. No matter how bad your day is, 30 minutes on a King and your face hurts from the grin. There's just something about a King.
