2008 Touring Rear Pulley Change : V-Twin Forum: Harley Davidson Forums

I'm thinking of changing my rear pulley on my 08 RG from the stocl 66 tooth to the sportster 68 tooth. I want to keep my IDS and from what I see guys are using the 40518-07 pulley that comes with a bearing that seem to be for IDS. I already have IDS on my bike and have found a lot better price on a 40354-07 it is a 68 tooth for 07 up sportster. Anyone know if the 40354-07 will work with my IDS that I aready Have on my bike? I'm just not sure if there is a dofferance in the IDS Pulley and a non IDS Pulley

I have the 40518-07 on my 07 EG but they came stock without the IDS.
Don't know about your part number?

If you haven't already figured it out, you need the 40518-07. It's the Japanese Sportster 68T IDS pulley.

I think you mean the 40518-08. As you stated he already knows all this but I guess he thinks if he keeps asking that same question on every forum someone will tell him that the cheaper pulley will work, lol!

The 40518-07 is for the 07 year and the 40518-08 is for the 08 models.
Each comes with the proper bearing.

why you do this, what is the point. are you racing, save gas, get speed etc. can you explain pls.

My -08 pulley came with the 9254 bearing and needed to changed to the 9285 bearing for my 08 FLHX. The bearing would have been proper had I been installing the pulley onto an 08 Japanese Sportster.

The 07 and 08 bikes are under geared. Adding a couple teeth makes the gearing better, particularly 1st and 6th gears.

My bad, My bike is an 07 and it came with the right bearing for it.
The 07 models have a 1 inch axle and the 08 models have a 25 MM axle.
Haven't changed an 08 model but my 07 worked like it was made for it.

In the case that happened to me it was the race width that was incorrect as both bearings are 25mm.
