2012 Ultra Limited
My brother bought a new Ultra several months ago. He would like to change the exhaust and the air cleaner using the following parts;
Head pipes are the S&S 2 into 2 with built in cross over #550-0004
Mufflers are Reinhart 3.5" #500-0100C
Air cleaner is an Arlen Ness #18-512
Now The Big Question; With the above parts installed will the bike have to be tuned??
Thanks,
Bruggy55

Just a not real educated guess here, but changing so many things he'll either need to have it tunes or install an after market tuner.

There's such a huge difference in riding a heavy motorcycle that runs at 80% of it's potential versus 100%. For example, comming up on a small grade in the highway, rolling on the throttle and the power is there versus downshifting and then 1 or two minutes later having to shift into the higher gear again. It's a bunch of money (close to $1000 to do it right) to buy a tuner and have a bike tuned by a dyno guy who knows what he's doing but I'd spend that money over a piece of chrome any day.

Definately need a tune. Go to the tech section of this forum and you can ask for recommendations for a good tuner in your area. BTW, he's going to like those pipes. They work very good and the fit and finish is quality stuff.

I also have a 12' Limited.
When I did the Stage I, I installed a PCV with autotune. It works excellent, about $600. My thoughts were if I did any other changes later I won't have to pay for a retune again.

Give the up grades a tuner and tune will help wake it, it made a big difference in mine over stock.

Need it? No. Guess that depends on the word 'need' though. The bike will run and ride just peachy fine without being retuned however to get the most out of the parts plunking down a couple benjamins for a Power Comander would be a good idea. There are a million different fuel controllers out there and I'd say that most are pretty good however more people that I've met use the Power Commander than any other. My tuner loves em too. Guess they're just easy.
The difference between tuned vs. un-tuned is night and day. Any downloaded map off the PC website falls in the un-tuned category. "downloads" from the HD dealer are even worse.
My advice for best performance, put all the parts on and either get an AutoTune module and fiddle with it for six months or just pay a guy to tune the bike on a dyno. I opted for the latter and was pretty darned happy with the results.

it will definitely need to be richened up. just changing pipes and air cleaner, it's still going to be really on the lean side. shud be a download for the pipes you're putting on. just my 2 cents worth.

I have a 2012 Ultra V&H true duals, monster ovals and Power Vision tuner, so far just have the tune provided by fuel moto but it made a huge difference in the bike. Going to get it dynoed next

The headers will mean no CATS. the free flowing pipes and AC put him well beyond what the ECM can make up for . With out adding fuel it will be run way to lean.
You can run around trying to find someone to say it ok as is but that is not going to change fact. A simple set of slips ons you can get away with a stage one and removing CAT's NO.
