2012 Ultra Limited - Cylinder Shut Down

Is there anyway to stop the cylinder from shutting down, when it gets to hot... I was told that the cylinder will shut down when at a stop, to keep it from over heating. Is that true? Thanks

It should be in the owners manual on how to change it. But why would you want to?

Yep there is a way to shut it off.
Look in the "Operation" section of your manual.

Engine off,key on,twist throttle past the closed position and hold, look for dash light to momentarily light, return throttle to resting position. To turn it back on repeat.

That's how it works on a 2010.I figure it is still the same on a 2012.

After reading about in the manual, I see the logic behind it, with the fairing, and lowers, it needs airflow over the motor, and living in Florida, it gets hot. I'll keep it on, but thanks to everyone that replied.

I never knew that mine was working until I got stuck in a traffic jam at some construction in St Louis on a 95 degree day. Then I used the rear cylinder shutoff as a warning that things were getting out of control on temperature. I shut the bike off except when I wanted to move it. It was off about 5 minutes for each minute it was running and I bet it helped save some excess wear by me heeding that warning of the rear cylinder shutting off. I ended up with a push mobile for about an hour or so but the bike still runs great today. Being aware of the warning signs that your bike gives you may well save you lots of expensive engine work.

Scrubs is reading this now saying WTF is this?
During this Overheat/Parade mode, aka Rear Cyl. Shutdown does the injector continue to deliver fuel to the combustion chamber? What happens to this unspent fuel? Does it just evaporate in the residual heat of the cylinder head? Just wondering since I don't own an FLHT...yet.

The injector is shut off, and the piston acts as an air pump, according to the manual.

The "official" term in 2009 was EITMS:

Engine Ignition Temperature Management System

The acronym helps to de-stigmatize it to some degree, I suppose. It is apparently triggered by the head temp, not the oil since I have had it kick in when oil was at 210*.

Note that in a VERY slow parade, even that doesn't work and the engine starts sounding like a dryer full of spark plugs. Very embarrassing with a local beauty queen on the back waving to the crowd...

take off the stock oem cat exhaust add a 2-1 pro pipe fulpack and k&n air-filter and run a good 20-50 amsoil or spectro oil in the motor and a full syn gear lube 70/140 in the trans

turing that stupid rear cylinder mode off is a good thing Im surprized H-D even tells us how to do that

plus I agree with boston 62 about all that plastic on the bike keeping air from getting to the engine

rear cylinder "kill"

Do all the newer bikes have this feature or function or is it just on the touring bikes with a lot of fairing?
