Poor man's Stage 1?

I have a 05 FLHRI with a very cool Screamin Eagle air cleaner football cover, however, that is all there is "screamin" about the intake. It has the full size stock plastic back, and an HD paper filter.

I have drilled holes and added pipe to air boxes on diesel trucks to increase air flow before, so it occurred to me, why can't I do that to the bike? Open up the plastic, cut out the bottom, drill holes, whatever, and add a KN filter sized for the stock air cleaner box? Would this give me a sub-$50.00 stage one, or something close? More importantly, would this not work for some reason?

Anyone tried this before? Any thoughts, gentlemen? (and ladies, of course)

I did exactly what you are talking about to a b2002 FLHRCI Worked perfect. The Dyno tuner told me it flowed every bit as good as a SE

Has the exhaust been changed? You won't see any real benefits unless you do the full stage one. That means high flow filter, high flow exhaust, and retune.

its got v&h pro pipe on there already, so if I open it up at the front end as well, I'll need to go see dynodifference for a tune, I'm thinking...

wolf, what exactly did you do? how much of the plastic did you drill or remove?

I think I want to leave something on top and front for rain....

Is there really any benefit to changing the air cleaner if you never operate at WIDE OPEN throttle?

No not really
The a/c only helps above 4000 rpms. About 4 hp

There ya have it sports fans, a 'yes' and a 'no'. Together they amount to a definite maybe.
Actually stroker's reply may be slightly more correct, at least as far stock motors go.

If you increase the airflow in, you should increase the airflow out!

If you let it in it's gotta get out or you're not making any horses.

Not only that, but if the old air can't get out then the new air can't get in.

just because you put a stage 1 breather on dosent mean there is more air going in . there isnt a restriction until 4000 rpms at WOT.
just like putting some aftermarket exhausts on dosent make it breath any better than some stock exhaust.
you disrupt/change the flow and cause it to go lean as well as rich in areas of the map (EFI) when changing the A/C, but the biggest changes will be seen under load at 70 kpa and up.
and on decel.
