They then told me something that i really couldnt believe: On page 169 of the 2011 owners manual, under hydraulic lifters it says "when starting an engine which has been turned off even for a few minutes, the valve mechanism may be slightly noisy until the hydraulic units completely refill with oil." who would've thunk? Look in your manual, i know no-one reads them but its in there.
yup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Road Rash wants to know Dino or Syn?
Guess everyone has noticed the noise. I got the same story from a HD Mechanic about my Road King. It sounded like a sewing machine to me but then this was my first HD. Up until now I always rode Japanese bikes. I am now used to the HD engine noise and tune it out of my head.

Took it back to dealer and they said they have seen a bunch of the 103's that make noise when new! Told me to ride it and it will go away after 200-300 miles. Anybody else hear of this or have this happen?
Thanks
My new 12 does the exact same thing! I hate it! I wish I had my 09 back! I'm going to sell this one in fall. Then find a 11 with a 96"

New bikes need to be broken in and the rings to cylinders properly seated. My new top end rehoned and reringed, had back fires, burrpling and deceleration uneven pops until around 800 miles utill then the rings and cylinders seated. Basicly take your bike out when new for a 3rd gear valve seating affair. Go from 20 to 60 miles per hour while in 3rd gear for around 10 consecutive times. accelearing to 60 then dethrrotleing to 20 mph.Do that 10 times. Your rings are now seated and now you can continue on breaking in the bearings, tolerances of metal to metal parts, shocks and all else that moves for the next 10k miles. Please dont race it in the red for the firstl 10k its not broken in yet! Tolerances are tighter than ever. New technologies.
Still valve seating takes anywhere form 20 to 1000 miles idealy while varied rpms are observed. I varied mine several times in every gear. I also downshifting in the hills ups and downs, took it out for normal freeway driving and tried to keep her under 3000 rpms for 1000 mi. All the unhealthy noises have gone away and I have a smooth downshift and ready acceleartion in any gear.

Both my Fatboy & RKC start up & are as quiet as a mouse. But I'm getting older; maybe my hearing is going.

Would be a lot cheaper just to change the lifters.

AGREED! If ya want a less noisy bike, ya need to buy something that does not have pushrods!

HDWRENCH wants to know Dino or Syn?
Funny my 2012 SG with 1763 miles on it will rattle every time on start up. 100% stock at this point.. I laugh about it as I have a 120 that is going in it. HD will tell you that its normal and will not harm anything yada yada.

To state that its normal and just due to the fact that HD put it into print is BS.. I own two LS engines and they run just about the same lifter and they do not rattle when I start it.. More smoke and mirrors from hd.. just like having .012 run out on the crank is ok .. LOL

Why Not just put in a different set of Lifters and Maybe some cams while there.... SE 255's or 48's along with SE slender taper adjustable push rods...

This would be Cheaper than buying a different bike.

signed....BUBBIE

Guess I Should have read on further to see the other KINDA SAME suggestions..........

Lifters from the Pros....Gaterman and Woods.. I've not used them but would from the builders I read suggesting that they are good.

My 2012 Ultra Limited does that too. Worse in Winter than Summer. When it's cold out it sounds like the head is coming off.

Dealer said it's normal - still does it at 6000+ miles.
