2002 Road King Cruise control failure

Today the Cruise control on my 2002 Road King (FLHRCI) went kaput. Seems like the stepper motor is inoperative.
All functions work except it fails to keep constant speed. I swapped the control module with another one I have and the symptom stayed with the control module.

Tried ordering another via the internet and was met with rebuffs everywhere. Seems like Harley has stopped distribution of cruise control parts for early touring models.
The part in question is 70955-98B - Control module. It is also part of Cruise control kit 77183-02 also no where to be found.

I have been unable to find anywhere in the universe a place that sells 70955-98B.
One thread I found said that 70989-98B is an acceptable substitute but it also is no where to be found. Also how can I confirm this?

Has anyone gone through this scenario? If yes, what can be done to get my Road King cruising again?

Have you used your local dealer's parts counter and asked them to do a "part locator" search nationally/internationally using HDNet?

Carl,
Thanks for the quick reply.

That's tomorrows project but other people on the forums I have perused have tried this avenue and failed.
About the only thing I can hope for is a suitable substitute.
About a year ago I purchased one of the kits (77183-02), which has now been obsoleted, for another project which is why I was able to swap the bad one out and determine the module is bad. Unfortunately I need the good one for another bike.

This maybe worth a try .... i thought i had a 'stepper' problem but traced it to the cable module on the headstock, this sits just behind your throttle cables, you got two wires which activate this device, simply unplug it, tape them up and hey presto, the cruise control works reliably again - you can still switch the system off by tapping your front brake but not by rolling of the throttle so be aware.

Good luck pal.

Thanks Biffo,. The thing you are talking about is called a "Roll Out" switch here in the states. I thought of that also but the disconnecting the wires did not resolve the issue.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have resolved the issue thanks to a bird dogging parts guy at Gator Harley in Leesburg Florida.
He managed to find a "Almost substitute" and it does work. They even had two in stock. Installed it today. It is PN# 70989-98C. It is the module only.
The original PN# (70955-98B) included the cable that attaches the module to the throttle body. The substitute does not have this cable. I do not know what I would do if I ever need a cable since there is no part number for it.

Again, Thanks for all the suggestions, links and comments.

I know this is kind of an old post but I thought I would post this I case anyone ever needs it.

The cable you are referring to is called a stepper cable. Part number 56372-98 would most likely work. I called Harley he said he doubts they can get it but when I gave him the part number he said it could be ordered and would be about $40 CDN (there may be a revised part number but he didn't say). I found it in an old cruise control retrofit instruction guide on the Harley website for the 1996-1999 Road Kings
