JHC wants to know Dino or Syn?
Detachable Tour Pak Brackets

I have done some research but can't seem to find an alternative to HD's "Detachable Tour-Pak Mounting Rack" (Part No. 53246-09A) for my 2011 FLKTCU. The complete kit runs $549.95. Any alternatives?

Regarding the HD kit you mention, take a look at the installation instructions (your dealer parts guy/gal can print them for you) and the service parts list included in the kit. There may be many items you don't want/need; e.g. CB antenna reloaction parts, which add to the cost of the kit.

You may find that simply buying the basic two-up tour pak rack and mounting hardware are all that you need.

As for the aftermarket, I'm not aware of any for '09 and newer models, though you can check with FBI and other aftermarket vendors to see what may be available.

Just because your's failed doesn't mean they all will, I was just giving him another option. Mine actually cost more than HD's and is better looking, works great.

What brand did you have that failed?

Consider all the people who's safety is at risk if that mount breaks.

Buy the properly engineered and tested product.

See thread below for my experience with aftermarket tourpak brackets.

You are right, I read this thread on hdforums.com I believe and posted a response. Another member on there had the same luck and threatened to sue Brian of BRC Creations if he didn't get his money back. He did eventually......then some people that have had them have had NO problems.....if I replace mine I will go with fatbaggers.

After I posted my experience I was contacted by four people via PM who have had failures with these brackets, two different brands. Luckily nobody was hurt, the worst one had their tourpak destroyed and it's contents ejected all over the freeway..

I simply wouldn't risk it with something that could lead to serious injury, my girlfriend starts napping out after an hour on the road.. Could you imagine if the backrest just flat out disappeared?

And she's a tiny lil' thing too, I don't know that I'd notice if she flew off the bike...

Uggh...

Excellent suggestion. Hopefully I can purchase only what I need and maybe save a buck or two. Need to avoid BRC or the like that's for sure.

JHC, you're welcome.

Regarding the aftermarket detachable tour pak racks, sublime started a thread on hdforums.com which received additional pictures of the BRC and Milwaukee Bagger racks:

http://www.hdforums.com/forum/tourin...k-mount-2.html

MB has sold two iterations of detachable tour pak racks for '08 and older models. I had both without any issues, and still use the second version. The two are easily distinguished by the shape of the vertical sides: the earlier version starts out vertical from the docking points, but then angles inward resulting in the need to drill holes in the tour pak to match the narrower hole location and base of the rack; and, a newer version with vertical sides and holes that match those used in the HD tour paks '08 and older.

I haven't read or heard of a failure with the MB racks; only the BRC racks. The BRC racks seems to be distinguishable because they use a modified shock bolt for the forward mounting point; the MB racks use the HD mounting hardware and points with the forward mount being rearward of the shock bolt.

Personally, I have no familiarity with aftermarket tour pak racks for 09 and newer models.
