2011 Street Glide - Rear Shocks

I have had my new Street Glide for a few weeks now, and was noticing that it would bottom out on some of the sharper bumps in the road. I was reading up on aftermarket shocks and was planning on replacing the stock ones.

This afternoon I decided to check the air pressure in my rear shocks....it was "0"

Guess they forgot to check them after assembly?? Either that or there is a leak somewhere. Anyway, I checked the recommended psi and filled them up. Took it for a ride this evening and what a difference a little air makes

I weigh about 215, so I have them set on the high side at 40 psi. I'll have to keep an eye on them to make sure they aren't losing pressure.

Steve

Congrats on the new bike!
Probly forgot to check them during the PDI.
Have you checked the air pressure in the tires and check oil levels?

Thanks

Yes, oil and tires are fine. I think you're right, they missed it on the inspection. Right from the dealership I noticed that the rear shocks would bottom out on sharp bumps. I just figured that this was normal with the lowered back end on the Street Glides.

On my Ultra Limited I felt a hard ride when I first got it and no air in shocks. Put some in and gone again.. Had leak in lines so warrante replaced all hardware tubbing and fittings for shocks. Been fine since. Keep a check on the pressure...

If you get ready for a better ride than what the stock shocks give you, check out Arnott air ride..They are not cheap but wow....The ride is awesome... The wife and I rode yesterday and after a 1 hour and 15 minute ride(that she usually has to hobble off the bike)..She said "wow , my back isnt hurting like it used to". This is the first ride she has gone on since I installed them...We love them

I was out yesterday and every bump was harsh. I checked the shock pressure this morning and it was down 10 psi. Pumped them up and todays ride was smooth. If you get a pump and check the pressure regularly, no need for aftermarket shocks.

motorheads5 is reading this now saying WTF is this?
The stock SG suspension is pretty dissapointing I fought air leak's and it was never right for more than 3 or 4 day's.
I would bottom out 2 up often and then go solo and it was a brick.
I bit the bullet and went Arnott Aldan's I have not been able to ride it but everyone that has it loves it.
Now I push a button and read my pressure gauge on the dash!
It cant get much better than that IMO

Had the one inch lower shocks on my 09 CVO Road Glide, same shocks as the street glide.

I tried for more than a year to live with the poor ride. Tried many different air pressures. Still a big bump and it would bottom out, or the rebound was too much.

Good shocks are a huge improvement. I put Progressive 940's on mine and a huge improvement.

In my opinion there is a huge need for good shocks on the Steet Glide, and other bikes with the 12 shocks.

Thumbs up

I just changed the rear shock oil in my 09 Streetglide last weekend because of the same issues you all are speaking of. I followed this members thread.

http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/ha...ir-shocks.html

WOW! what a difference. Pretty simple too. It took me about an hour start to finish after I built the press.

I did not want to steel the thread or make a new post, but can you just use any air pressure gauge to check the shocks or does it take a HD unit?

Any accurate low pressure gage would work. However to put air in it needs to be a very low volume, low pressure pump. A couple pounds of air makes a big difference.

I also built the shock press and replaced the 5wt with 7.5wt Showa shock oil. Big difference.

I have an 2008 Ultra Classic, and my rear suspension with 20psig solo ride with no problem. when riding with a passeger I bottom out and skid hits pavement, not good.
I Added air up to 35psig and was better but came accross one fast dip in the road doing about 60 Mph and bottomed out again. Looks like I need to add more air. I weigh about 250 dressed, and my wife is about 130lbs for a total of about 400 lbs dressed not counting on extras in hard bags. Please advise if anyone can help. thanks, Crazyfrog.
