Average Cost Of A Stage One Upgrade

Well, yesterday I pulled the trigger on a Stage One upgrade for my 2007 Road King Classic. I'm getting a Power Commander III, Rinehart slip-ons, and an SE airbox. No dyno tune though. BEFORE I tell you what this is going to cost installed, I'd like to know what everyone thinks would be a decent price for this set-up? Does anyone have this exact set-up? If so, what did you pay, and how do you like it? As soon as I get a few replies, I'll let you know what it's costing me.

YankeeBob is reading this now saying WTF is this?
Whatever you are paying, it isn't enough unless you get a proper dyno tune.

I don't really see the need for a dyno tune on a touring bike. I think the dyno tune is basically to get "tuned in" on a higher revving engine.

I already bought the Rinehart slip ons, PCIII, and SE airbox. I'm kinda particular about my bike, and I always just buy "new" when I buy things for it. Cost me $1100 OTD. Just wondered if this was a good price or not with everything installed?

Also, is anybody else running this same setup that can give me an idea of what to expect?

Well, you know dealers, and I didn't know if I was getting ripped off or not.

I wouldn't say you got ripped off. Looks like you paid list price for everything plus labor.

You've got a lot to learn grasshopper. Touring bikes need a proper tune just like any other bike. Yes, you can get a ballpark tune with a preset PC but a custom tune is best. Also, wondering why the PC III when a PCV would be better for your bike. As to what you should pay...good question. I know Rineharts are expensive - about twice the price of other quality slip-ons. I would guess about $1000 for parts plus labor.

We get bikes into my buddies shop that HD dealers have installed what you have with some kind of map in the power commander. So for everyone of them is either to rich are to lean. So with out a dyno tune why did you waste your money on the stage 1 kit. Same thing as building an engine and hoping it is tuned right, just don't make since.

My Stage I: black Fatcat w/wrapped perforated baffle, S/E Ventilator air cleaner, TTS Mastertune. Total cost: $1,400. I've spent the last 5 months playing around with the TTS and getting the fuel right. It's as right as I can get it without a dyno. I'm going to JD's Cycleworks in September for a final tune.

hd4evr2008- Whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about. A dyno tune will maximize WOT behavior, but it also makes the bike run smoother, cooler, and stronger below the peak. Why spend over a grand on a Stage 1 and not get everything out of it?

Cant figure out why you would ride a $16k bike that you are particular about, and wont spring for another couple hundred to fine tune on dyno???

haven't done it yet, but when I asked the dealer about doing this, they stated it was in the $1,500.00 range. And I'll do the dyno also if just to get it to run cooler.

Dyno tune a must...........
I have a Road Glide (2009) and like you I thought I would just add the Power Commander and a generic PC tune and be done with it. The bike ran worse than stock. I played with mapping, timing, throttle position and in most cases it just got worse. Finally stepped up got it dyno tuned and it is a new bike, no pinging, better acceleration, bike runs cooler a must.

I have to second the question why did you not buy the PCV, the III is out dated, sounds like your dealer had some left over stock. Anyway with your setup and a dyno tune you to will tell the next guy it is a must do...............

I know several people who've had a Stage One done without a dyno, and they love the results. Bikes are running great and my dealer(and others) have said that with just a stage one, a dyno is a waste of money.
I wonder how many of you who are saying a dyno is a "must" did the stage one install yourself? That may have something to do with it. I don't know anyone that has had a dealer do the stage one, and had problems. Just my own experience though.
