Running Hot

Can anyone help me in diagnosing my problem with my bike running hot. When my bike was stock 88ci it would run hot in traffic like it did today. When i got a big bore 95ci same thing in traffic engine light came on. Now i have a 117 [engine light] same thing in traffic.

Now in all these cases i am riding with other bikes and mine seems to be the only one with the engine light coming on.

3 things I think a person should have with big ci builds.A great dyno tune, oil cooler ,& a lenale fan!!!!!Sounds like you might have a tune issue. You better get it check quick though, cause you could do some serious damage.Do you have an oil temp guage???

For starters, what year and model bike, what sort of build, what engine management, and who did the work and the tune?

You don't need two oil coolers in Waldorf given the weather we had this weekend, and unless you do nothing but parade riding, you don't need a fan. My Night Train with 10.5:1 compression and a Jagg cooler mounted on the downtube never went above 210 yesterday, and I was riding in the same 95 degree air that you were.

Ok for starters? If you read my post in the beggining some of those questiones were answered. If you didn't ride in the rolling thunder parade or the buffalo soldiers parade stuck in traffic and on top of that get stuck in the traffic at the bay bridge i am sorry but you weren't in the same conditions i was in yesterday.

I have a new build of a 117 the map installed in the thundermax is only to hold me over until tuned.

Yes riding i have no issues but when stopped in traffic like at the bay bridge in that heat yesterday and in dc during the parade became a problem.

Mark, Are you certain that your engine is running hot? The check engine(amber colored outline of an engine) lamp is normally associated with an emissions or drivability concern. Have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes? If timing is advanced too far it will cause overheating. If noone else is overheating maybe yours really isn't either.

How do you check the codes?

strokerjlk is reading this now saying WTF is this?
engine light is coming on because the oil pressure has dropped below 2-3 pds.
no amount of oil coolers are going to help cool the motor sitting still. while a fan will help some you would need a huge fan on a cooler to help sitting still.
I realize the fan in question doesn't cool the oil cooler. it cools the motor. gotta help some but it will never be enough for a extended idling period.
here is what you are dealing with HP X 0.746= BTUH
A stock H-D motor making 60 hp = 44.76 BTHU
A motor such as yours making 120 hp= 89.520 BTUH
Double the heat output.
easy to see why it breaks down oil quicker
you got to take the extra precautions when you start producing more hp with increased compression and cubic inches.
sitting and idling for extended periods is just not in the cards anymore.
ya gotta get moving or get it shut down.

I agree Stroker.I would go as far to say with these big motors riding in 90 weather with traffic stop & go.Your bike is going to over heat I don't care what kind of tune, or oil cooler you run.You will have to pull over & get a drink & let the bike cool down!!! I'm not expert, but the lenale fan helps a bit ,but you have to keep it running while your on the highway!!!I seen my temps go as high as 240-245 close to 250(Outside temp 80-85+) with out the lenale fan!!! moving with the fan 225-235!!!& of corse my fan took a crap the first day!!!

I am going to order this tommorrow.I really think this oil cooler will help in standing still traffic.

ULTRAHARLEY COOLER
We at Brooks Performance have been dealing with the application of thermal barrier coatings for over 18 years now. The application of these coatings in the effort to control Heat with Thermal barriers, friction reducers, and thermal dispersants has been applied to pistons, exhaust systems, combustion chambers, valves, ports, etc etc. We have built some of the biggest badest bikes on the market, always on the edge and using American made products and still I have always been concerned with oil temp. We tried every cooler, oil filter cover on the market.

The need for thermal control has increased over the years for obvious reasons, bigger motors, increased compression, head work etc. etc.

And we that love these American made machines look down at that oil temperature gauge and think about what that is doing to the life of my motor. H-D's answere ( the company of denial ) to this is to turn off the rear cylinder, shut the motor down at 250 deg., provide little plastic crotch shields, a new vest you can dip in water, and a $75. plastic water bottle. Got to love that, imagine your bike in traffic stopping when it hits 250 deg. just grab your water bottle. All I can say to this is thank God for synthetic oils.

Then the best product to hit the market since synthetic oils came out. ULTRA COOL (ultracoolfl.com) This idea of Marlon Moss's is to keep the oil temp within the correct range 190 to 220 deg. The patent design is so simple and straight forward that this will sell itself. The design is even good looking, a lot better than most of those front spoilers we have all seen, they are paintable or leave them black, they actually hide a clutered area on the fl's. There are many applications now and more coming out.

I won't go into the function of this product, we that ride all know the issues, just talk to Robert at ultracoolfl.com I have found their customer service to be very good, I don't know the lead time now butI would bet they are going to be busy.

Best Regards
Buy American
