extended warranty, good or bad idea?
i bought a 2008 roadking police model in Aug. the dealer said warranty was up in April and i had until then to get extended warranty. is it worth the extra expense? my bike is stock but plan on exhaust, fuel management, and air cleaner up grades.maybe a cam someday. will these changes make a difference? true is if harley is putting out a good product you really should not need ex. warranty, right?

Might be a good plan to have the extended warranty with the crank problems that they have especially if you are a high milage rider.

This is really a personal question that only you can answer. There are pros and cons either way. In reality it is like health insurance, if you never need to use it then it was a waste of money. If you need it then it is worth the price.
Really it is piece of mind if you are not in a position to spend an unexpected 100, or 1000 bucks. If that doesn't bother you then bypass the warranty. The odds are with you that you will not have a major problem if you have a reliable bike up to this point.
Even if I had a bad crank I would not replace it with a stock one, I would get a Darkhorse crank. But I do all my own wrenching any way.

Somehow, I fell for the pitch -- bought the extended warranty for my 2003 FLHTCUI. I was not happy that I did so until..... The Radio/CD crapped out, then the shifter seal failed, the fairing bracket cracked and now the cam shoes worn.....all under cover under the extended warranty. So around 200+Ext. warranty costs.......I am probably ahead.... and I didn't have to do any work.
Would I buy the extended again....I think not. I just got lucky this time!

If you need it it's a bargain, having said that it is a item we push in the dealership cause it is a license to print money. We normally receive a bigger comm for selling extended warranty than the com on the bikes.

Money well spent in my opinion. Had a flat with 23 miles on my heritage, found a screw on the first ride, they towed me in and put new tire in a few hours I was back on the road..with no warranty I would have had to shell out $240 for my 23 mile voyage.

My '09 FLHTPI with 4k miles has been in the shop for the last 2 weeks for a vibration. First I was nicely told there was nothing wrong with it. (a sensor was replaced) Took it to another shop where it was all checked out, crank run out @ .005, as we know that's well within specs . Well now they wanted me to pay for gaskets because Harley doesn't pay for exploritory services.
Guess how that went. Now the bike is back at the original shop waiting for the regional rep to ride it. So I will be without my bike for about a month.
As for the vibration, it feels like half the magnets are gone on the stater rotor.
Just food for thought. As far as a warranty, It depends on the shop, IMHO

First free year membership in HOG would have covered that.

You really need to decide for yourself. I bought a new 03 FLHRCI and a 4 year extended. At 18K cam tensioner failed, took out oil pump. At 20K thrust washer failed, tore up jugs and a bunch of other stuff. Warranty was $800 and change, parts for both repairs probably about cost of warranty. So basically it covered my labor, p/u delivery of bike.
In my case it paid for itself.

Only the first $100 if you don't get the extended coverage.
