Handling question

I notice there is a long list of braces and gadgets at the top of this forum. I assume these are to resolve a handling issue? You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I've been out of the loop on Harleys since about 2002.

It does occur but I would not lose any sleep over it, some guys never experience it , some do. I have and don't run a stabilizer...yet but I am replacing my rear shocks to Ohlins and going to the standard height. If I still need a stabilizing device I will get one then.

You don't need it on 09 and new bikes since they changed the frames. At least I have not read anyone complaining about it.

It made a huge difference on mine in the wind and the wind buffet from semi trucks on the hyways.

I wouldn't be without it.

pends on how ya ride. takes very little push to need all the stabilisers on a HD. if you ride like grandma, you will be fine.

The link between the swing arm and the frame is kind of weak. Most of these gadgets try to stiffen the link with shackles between the frame and the swing arm. I believe that the cause for the wobbles is due to the shaft and rubber bushings flexing too much. When the bike is out of alignment or the engine mounts are worn it increases the problem. I have seen a couple of products that treat this problem directly instead of the symptoms. One is the Sta-bol poly bushings which I have no experience with, the other is the "Glide-Pro" system which I do have on my bike and highly endorse. It replaces the swing arm shaft with a high-strength steel shaft plus beefs up the rubber bushings with poly inserts. The results have been great for me. I am upgrading and adding the poly motor mount soon, I have the new mount, just haven't had time to install it yet. I have ran the Glide-Pro shaft and poly bushing inserts for two years now and swear by them. If you use this link and watch the home videos this guy has created to show how to install his system it will explain the system better then I can. He also has a video on bike alignment that is awesome. Go to the site and then click on the install link for the videos...

allen sputhe designed the original, theb rest are take offs of his idea. just like most jims and other marketable items, allen drew the original plans.

IMHO, true track with bronze bushings is the ultimate for launching (as we tested with the AMRA bagger) if you want a less harse ride, go with poly bushings. even smoother? go with the rubber .

But if you want to cure the wobbles, you got to firm up the pivot point laterally like glide pro and other products attempt to do. I have not noticed a reduction in "smoothness" in my ride, on the contrary the bike tracks like it should with no noticable firmness increase in shock damping because the shocks dampen inputs along the radius of travel allowed by the piviot point between the frame and the swing arm. The lateral movement due to weak shaft and rubber uninforced bushings causes the bike to wobble some in turns due to inperfections in the road surface and/or wind force inputs. Alignment of the engine, frame, swing arm etc. can contribute along with engine vibration from worn mounts.

I'm not saying that other "cures" don't work as well as the one I chose to use, I'm just saying that it does work and if you watch the guys videos he does a good job of explaining why the stock bikes feel mushy and wobble at times during high speed turns. Anyone who is looking to understand why his pre 2009 touring bike does this would benefit from going to this guys web site. What if anything you choose to try to correct this problem or condition is your business.

hey ozzie! i was saying the same thing! there have been some to complain of vibration/harshness with the firmer bushings and mount. they are really feeling more road and tire. thats why i put the options in there.

as usual, we are on the same page, you just talk funny. LOL
