2010 Ultra Classic: Clutch or Transmission Problem?

I have a new 2010 Ultra Classic; I previously owned a 2002, 2003 and a 2006 Ultra Classic, all with the Twin Cam 88 and 5-speed transmission, so I know I can’t readily compare this bike to ones I owned in the past.

My concerns, is that I hear gear or transmission whine in 1st and 6th gear. Not a big deal, but wondering if this should be considered ‘normal’. My bigger concern is that when the motor and transmission is really hot, I notice a lot of clunking when I engage and disengage the clutch. Not actually shifting the transmission, just engaging and disengaging the clutch. I also notice a whining noise, unless I hold the clutch in. Bike only has 200+ miles on it; do I have any concerns that should be addressed immediately?

Thanks, Richard

Normal for the gear whine. Started when they went to the six speed. The clunking is the IDS. Threre are rubber bushings in the driveline between the rear pulley and rear wheel to take up drive pulses. It is kind of a PITA but it can make you be smooth with the clutch.

Try Redline 20w60 Motorcycle in the trans & primary. You won't believe how much better the shifting is & it is as quiet as a church mouse.Regards,Tom

Redline actually recommends their MTL or newly labeled Primary oil for primaries, not the engine oil. Shockproof for the transmissions.

Yep, the clunking you hear is the IDS... they all do it. Seems to get quieter with age. I've got over 5k miles on my 09 SG and i'd say the "clunking" is about half as loud/noticable as when it was new.

I am surprised about the gear whine though. They changed the gears for the 2010 models to get rid of the whine.

Yes,I've used the Shockproof.Good, very good!Their MC oil is rated for wet clutches & since I had a couple of the 20w60 qts lying around,I thought wat da hell! The trans might shift better, but its a close call. What is really suprising is how QUIET the primary is with the 20w60.After years of using synthetic,I am switching to BRADD PENN Semi-Synthetic 20w50 MC oil for the engine. But that is a different topic.Regards,Tom ps:Zinc & phosphorus are a flat tappet/push rod engines best friend!

You can thank our government and the Moco for the toaster oven they put between your legs. The 10's run hotter than the blue blazes. I've measured temps with a IR temp gun on my inner right pant leg of 140 deg while riding my 2010 Triglide.

Picked up my 2010 1st week in Aug. at 300 miles whine in first gear, clutch rattle in neutral. At 1000 mile service HD dealer replaced inner primary bearing and clutch throw out bearing. Took it back at 1500 miles noise was getting louder than my slip-ons. Dealer pulled the clutch apart again..... no change !!!
Contacted a Lemon Law Atterney ( Magnuson-Moss Fed.Warrenty Act. ) Test riding a new 2010 tomorrow.

Man, that sucks. Have you gone back to the HD Rep for corrective action? Sounds like they need to gut it!!

Thats quick, most states require more than a couple trips to the dealer.

Nothing to worry about. All gears are helical on the 2010 Touring bikes unlike the previous models who had straight cut gears for 1st and 5th.

Since they put the dampers on the rear pulley do they still have the compensating sprocket in the primary? No real reason to have both.

Richard: I have a 2010 Limited and haven't heard any whine in any gears, If I happen to go below 2000 RPM I hear something I guess in tranny, Lugging ?? As soon as I get 2000 RPM's or higher it goes away. If it's disturbing just take it in for a look, make sure it documented..... Good Luck
