FLHTCU Ultra Classic
I'm ready to take the plunge finally to the Dark Side as my friends say. I was curious which year should I consider purchasing? Just looking at used prices I should be able to go up to a 05 or maybe a 06. I know there isn't much difference between them but is there a year that I should shy away from. Just looking for a good clean motorcycle with lower miles on it with out tons of chrome on it.
Thanks in advance Bob

Welcome here Bob.
My next bike may also be an Ultra. I was leaning towards an '07 because it still has the throttle cables, but it still has the smaller tank. I guess we'll see what happens.
The 96cu engine and 6 speed are a must also IMO.

I have to agree go for the 96 inch motor and 6 speed. Outside of that there's not a big difference until you get to the 09's.

Definately go with the 96cu and the 6 speed. Guys I know that bought back in 06 wish they had waited for the 6 speed.

Any year that has the 96" motor and the 6 speed trans. The '10's have the catalist exhaust. Buy a chromeless Ultra and deck it out to your liking, a lot of chrome in the wrong places is sometimes not pleasing to the eye. Just sayin'.

If you're buying used keep your eye out for a bike that's been upgraded from the stock TC 88 to a 95 big bore kit. Personally, I'd take an '05 or '06 with a 95 over a '07 with the stock 96.

I've been happy as can be on my '07. The 6 speed is a huge plus and as far as a small gas tank goes, my butt wears out way sooner than the tank runs dry! Welcome to the family.

I had an 06 Ultra Classic and loved it. The HD six speed IMHO SUCKS. It is of no value until you are at 75mph+ any lower than that and you will be lugging your engine.

Do Not buyh an 07/08 for a few reasons
Taller gearing sucks,Heat mgmt sucks,6th gear is severly overrated(because of gearigng)
06 has new Audio system other than that I would probably go with an 02 if you can find a low mileage godd condition one you'll be 10-12 thousand ahead of if you bought new. Then take this savings and say for 2-3 grand go to a 107ci with a good tune and you will have the best damned bike for a saving of around 10grand.

That taller gear ratio doesn't suck if you like to ride long distances at or a little above the speed limit. Back east they have slower speed limits, but out west we can go 75 mph. In Texas there are 80mph speed limits. I love my '07's gearing and can cruise at 80 without buzzing my engine. I don't know what heat mgmt is, but my SERT fuel management allows around 50 m.p.g. on my 103 Streeetglide riding solo on the highway, and it doesn't run hot at all.

YOu still have to get the bike out of first gear-NO??And if your two up with bags full you betta be holding that clutch in al little longer and givin a little extra throttlel
50 MPG-WOW thats unbelievalbe and no heat,Are we riding the same motorcycle?...I guess you dont' have much traffic out there ...when i get in stop and go traffic this thing wants to explode.
I didnt realize how geographically this bike could run so different
You probably get good gas(No Ethanol) too!!!

I have 06 Ultra w/ Stage 1 and Rhinehart true duels. I love it, have ridden 08 with 96 and 6 speed. I think with the heat issues and all, I will keep 06. Good Luck in your decision.

Oh I don't know, a whole lot of chrome can be added than what a Ultra comes with.
