My speakers are intermittently cutting out when driving. Sitting still they work fine. I can switch the speaker switch from the rearward position to the center position and back and the speakers work again. I can't find any information on how the speaker switch works. The sound doesn't look like it goes through the switch (looking at the wiring diagram). I don't want to start tearing into things without knowing how the system works. Anybody have any thoughts or know how it works.
It would be nice to know what year/model you have (e.g. is it still under warranty?) but mine is doing the same thing on an 09 TriGlide (gone through two radios so far and the Factory has authorized another swap).
I don't know if it is a bad batch of HK radios or if this is the beginning signs of a recall.
Jut knowin' it a Harmon Kardon is enough for me...
(add that brand name to the list of **** where the
software comes from 2nd. semester dropout from
a technical school).
mine went, no audio. turned out that I had broken mounting brackets that ended up shaking the radio so badly the audio circuit was damaged. Had it repaired by Iron Cross Audio and had the brackets changed out..
I was hoping it wasn't the radio but a loose wire I am going to check it out this week. It works good when I'm not moving. I haven't tried it with the motor running and not moving.

I'm guessing that you no longer have any warranty left on the bike? If you find that it's a problem with the radio i'd suggest you look into getting a different [aftermarket] head unit. The HK unit isn't well know for it's quality. You can get a nice Alpine unit for about the price of having the HK repaired. I believe Hogtunes sells a retro kit that will allow the Alpine to work with your handlebar controls. Might as well add and amp and some better speakers while you are at it.
Mine was doing the same thing (09 FLHX) Bought it to dealer and they said it's happening to quite a few radios. They pulled it out and after about a week they replaced it with a new one

My understanding is that when HK accepts a radio under warranty replacement, it's a reburbished unit. My dealer has seen this happening on a number of Ultras.
After reading this post I guess I need to take my 09 Ultra to the dealer. My radio has cut out 2-3 times in the two months I've had the bike. The radio stays on just no sound. I turn it off, then back on after a couple of minutes and it works fine for another couple of weeks. I don't have a lot of confidence the dealer will find the problem since they couldn't see the tour pac lights didn't work when I picked up the bike when new.
You can also restore sound thru the speaker rocker switch but it's still a pain. Some information I was given regarding HK's policy with dealers. If a dealer returns a radio to HK and HK can't find something wrong, the dealer is charged $500 so dealers are reluctant to return a radio until they are assured there is a verifiable problem.
If your dealer is hesitant to support you, call The Factory and tell them you know this is a known problem. Have them contact your service manager.
CarollB Mine did the exact same thing and then the cut outs got closer and closer together until it hardly worked.
Don't think I got a refurb unit cause when I got it back most of my preset channels were still in the memory so it looks like they fixed my unit which is good I think cause if they gave me a brand new one I guess I could have had the same problem all over again? PIA no radio for almost three weeks
Would you believe that my radio is doing the EXACT same thing again after only being repaired a month ago...This really SUCKS...Bike isn't even a year old yet
Thanks for the info Reg26. I have to go to the dealer for a biker breakfast with my CMA chapter this Saturday so I'll talk to their servce dept. about the radio problems. I also want to see if they will do the re-flash for the ABS upgrade that recently came out on a SB.
If Harmon Kardon made umbrellas, they would probably leak
The speaker rocker switch is losing it's ability to restore the sound. It's hard to understand how HK could release such a product as their specialty is audio products.
In the last 4 days, I've lost virtually all sound. What's new is that twice the radio did the following:
Power is off and what I see on the display are the time and the word "set" (next to the #6 soft key) which is what I should be seeing. Twice, the display shifted to show the FM1 band with the station presets. It still doesn't play and if I push the "on" button, it tuns the radio on as it was originally "off". I have no idea why it showed the FM1 band display. Anyway, the radio is being swapped out by the dealer next week.
Well I fixed my radio. I went to the dealer to talk to them about the radio and the wife and I took a look on sales floor and we bought a 2010 Ultra. It rides like a dream and the radio works. She was doing a better job at selling the motorcycle than the salsepeople. It is Blue and silver. It has more power and is unbelievably more smooth than the 2006. The only downside is I had just ordered 2 new tires from Cycle Gear. Dunlop Elite IIIs.
Having same issue with sound cutting out, then I turn the radio off then on again and the sound is back but it doesn't stay for long. I already had Iron cross repair this radio once before. I was also wondering if anyone has done the lastest firmware update HD TMS320 8_19_0.upg and st10 tms320_bootloader_8_22_0.bin) I have the old update that is TMS 8_19.0 and TMS 320_bootloader 8_19.0. I try to burn it to disc and when I do the update on the radio the display says "verifying dsp image" and stays that way. I have not had the previous updates have that message. Has anyone been able to load the latest update off the HD website?
later.
This audio issue is vibration damage. Not uncommon on the 06 / 07 bikes. caused by the weak fairing brackets. Give them a call if they already fixed your radio. I'm sure they would be more than willing to work with you. have read nothing but good things about them.
