Dynamat - Dynamated flaring and glove-boxes
Following the advice of several on this forum I put Dynamat behind the speakers in the flaring - not the whole flaring just behind the speakers - the reason I didn't do the whole flaring was two fold (1) didn't want more weight then necessary, (2) I hide my radar detector in the flaring and I was fearful that the foil on the Dynamat would interfere. I did cover the entire inside of the glove boxes. I purchased 4 sq ft and I have plenty left over. Got it from Amazon. When I turned the radio on ('08 Ultra with Hogtunes upgrade) it didn't sound right, but when I turned the bass down it was great. Apparently one of the benefits is you get much better bass. Now I realize at speed that doesn't matter much but I'm thinking that since the bass is now much lower that the highs will be getting a bigger boast. I don't have a great ear but I can tell the improvement. It is an easy install as the Dynamat sticks good and is flexible to get it inside the glove box. If I didn't have the radar detector (Valentine) I would likely go back and do the entire flaring.

Your radar detector works from inside the fairing?? How about rear detection?

While you're at it, do the fairing too.

I just got new Hogtunes speakers for my 09 E-glide. I asked Pez in an e-mail if Dynamat was something I needed to do. He said that it would probably only make a difference when sitting still, and would not have much of a positive effect at speed. Just saying. I did not dynamat. I would love to hear the diffence between dynamat and not.

Yes, my Valentine 1 does work inside the flaring, of course the Laser part will not, but that has never been an issue for me. As to the difference at speed, of course this is very subjective, I have no way of proving it one way or the other, but it does seem to me to have a better response on the highs.

I did my entire inner fairing. Did see noticable increase in mid range and don't need to have the volumn cranked up near as high.
Glad I did it... I also have the HOG Tunes speakers.
Speakers first, had improvement. Then Dynamated, more improvement.

I installed Dynamat Dynaxorb pads about two months ago. These are about 6x6" rubber pads that glue directly behind the speakers onto the outer fairing. I was expecting a small improvement but was surprised when it was a major improvement. I can describe it best as cleaner and clearer, and like Bikertrashice I ended up turning the bass down to about 1/2, treble all the way up. For $25 ( here) this is a great bang-for-the-buck improvement IMO.
I just ordered the new Hogtunes Tweeter Pods, so we'll find out if I have yet another improvement in sound with these.

I sure would like an update on those tweeters. After looking at the posts I may have to try the dynamat. If it works great. If not I wont be out much money.
Keep us posted on the tweeters!

I think for motorcycle use, Dynaxorb is a better choice than Dynamat, though many people here report good results with either. Dynamat was designed to address speaker panel distortion -- it should be applied to the panel where the speaker is actually mounted to reduce vibration, rattles and squeaks. Now when your riding at 70 mph outdoors, completely exposed, on a paint-shaker with a growling exhaust, how much of your outer fairing's rattles are you really able to hear? Technically, if you're using Dynamat, it should be applied to the inner fairing as that's where the speaker is mounted.
The real problem for the batwing bikes with upgraded audio is the back-wave distortion caused the by proximity of the outer fairing to the back of the speaker. The reflected bass wave distorts the cone's current wave. DynaXorb breaks up those reflected waves when applied to the inside of the outer fairing.
Dynamat (the company) indicates that DynaXorb is the better choice for our application, but don't be surprised when you read that they recommend using DynaXorb applied on top of Dynamat for optimal performance. What else would they say? They make and sell the stuff!
