What is the sensor on rear of Air Cleaner box

I recently changed the air cleaner on my 1998 Roadking Police model for a SE unit replacing the black plastic box. There is a sensor mounted on the back of the plastic box held by 2 phillip head screws and nuts that i didnt mount back to the new style air cleaner. What is this sensor for?(i slip tied it to the wiring harness)
Air intake temp? Where should i mount it?
Also, I am experiencing high idle speeds when hot. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, it is the air intake temp. sensor. Mount it in the intake air stream if possible.

I put on a Big Sucker and there was a spot on the back for the sensor. I put it on and don't have any issues.

Your high idle when the motor is hot would be caused by the false indication the sensor is getting from not being mounted in the correct possition.

Put it back were it belongs and things should return to normal.

Yes, it is EFI Evo Thanks for the input, however, the wire is not long enough for me to mount it behind the air cleaner, in a simuler area, does it need to touch the air cleaner backing plate? If so, i will make it happen.
Ride safe
