2006 Harley-Davidson Road King Police Special

I'm looking at purchasing a Police Special Road King. I am not familiar with the differences between this version and the stock Road Kings. At a minimum I intend to swap out the single seat, for something that will hold 2 people. It looks like it will need rear boards as well. Does anyone have experience converting these models? Are there major differences in frame/motor. Thanks in advance for any advice.

No major differences in the frame/motor. Just my 2 cents worth, I would keep the police seat and add the Mustang passenger seat that matches the basketweave of the police seat. It is really comfortable.
My bike is a 2006 FLHP (Road King Police).

If you are going to use the bike for 2up, that is a good idea. If you don't have a 2up partner, just get the detatchable 1 up rack and leave it alone.

That seat is by far the most comfortable seat that you can have on a Harley bagger.

Old cop bikes are heros, If they could talk, the stories of chasing dangerous criminals at high speed, the presidents they have escorted, the funerals of famous people they have been to. They are stout of heart and tough.
My first harley was a 1963 police special. It was a great motorcycle but along the way of kids and bills it was sacrificed. I now own a 1998 Roadking Police special, and it too is much like the old one being tough and hard to stop. It came from the Charleston SC sherrifs dept and has caught hell. Things like running boards, crash bars, kick stand and exhaust were worn down almost in two. I cant tell you how much Ive spent, hell I wont tell my wife either, but I have a great motorcycle and it looks like new. It is my favorite toy in the stable. There is a lot to be said about police bike but enough rambling from a 62 year old fart.

I have an '05 Police RK. I also agree on keeping the rear seat and adding the Mustang passenger seat. The air ride sure is sweet! Although you do sit a bit higher than you would on a stock RK. I'm now in the process of figuring a way to dress up the ugly rear platform. I thought about getting rid of it but it's proved quite functional for hauling several cases of beer in a pinch.

I was planning to purchase an 06 FLHP but the 96 inch motor on the new 07's got my money.

The only difference that I am awear of that has not been mentioned is that they come with a heavy duty wire harness to handle the extra lights and communicaitons equipement. I think they have a high output stator also to power all the extra electronics.

There are pleanty of them out there. I used the motor company's web site and look under the used bike section searching for FLHP. This will get you a picture, discription and price from any dealership that has one for sale. Then you can decided how far you want to go to pick it up. They usually have a little info on them, but don't equate low miles to a better deal. I would rather have a county or state police bike over a city police bike. The city guys spend a lot of time going slow and getting the motor real hot. That isn't the best thing for an air cooled motor. The county and state police usually see more normal riding conditions. Just my 2 cents, and we all know what that is worth.

Good luck with your selection, I am sure you will enjoy whatever you get.

Not sure about the 06s, but I have an 07. Has the "heavier" electrical system, as someone already mentioned, and came stock with a 103ci engine. I agree that the police seat was hella comfortable, just couldn't get past how ugly it was, rusty hinge in the front sticking out above the dash, ugly ass plastic under the seat, sat so high that it messed up the sleek lines of the bike, damn it was ugly, swapped it out.

MrDoo,

I am thinking that you didn't like the looks of the seat.

It does seem that as far as seats go, the uglier the more comfortable they are. The better looking they are the worst riding they are.

Looks or comfort? It is up to each of us.

Thanks to everyone for the info.

I picked up an 06' Police Bike. It was used by the Orange County FL Sheriff. It had 2000 miles when I purchased it.

I've done quite a bit of work on it already. I replaced the air seat with a corbin. I heard they were hard, but mine has been fantastic. I prefer it over the tractor seat.

I replaced the bars with Wild One Chubby Road king II with internal wiring. For controls I went with Ness Rad III. I choose Kuryakn ISO grips and rider/passenger floorboards. I had a new(smaller) windshield cut. I also replaced the rear turn signal bar and relocated the license plate with the Kuryakn bar and the Harley Fender extension. The latest items are a set of Vance and Hines True Duals with Screaming Eagle slip ons, and a ness big shot fueler.

Next on the list is rims and tires and then a fresh paint job.

My wife is wondering why I didn't just buy a new one...but then again I would have done all this stuff anyway.

I love my police seat, but there is a lack of any back support. I swapped my police seat for a stock FLHT seat (($40)cheap) and added a stock back rest (($125)real nice). For less that $165 I now have the choice of the two seats, I have to admit the police seat is ugly.

For the money the police bikes are the best things on the road, the history is one of the best features on the bike.

Thanks Greg, It sounds like you gave it a lot of thought..thats what I am doing as well. I love the seat in terms of comfort. I don't know if I can give it up. I wonder if there is a way to modify it terms of the way it looks with out giving up the seats functionality. Is there a company that makes a selection of rear seats that will compliment the air ride seat?
