Road King Fuel Problem

Hello All,

Ok I am having a problem that no one can see to figure out. I have a 2003 Harley Road King. It has the air cleaner kit and Screming Eagle Pipes. It Also has the 95 inch fuel down load in the computer due to a fuel problem when I got it. The computer would not supply the engine with enough fuel as it was so they upgraded the computer with the 95 inch fuel down load. anyways recently my bike began acting as it was running out of gas. It has gotten progressively worse. One night I was on my way home and it was acting as if it was running out of gas and the idol went so high that it was doing 35 miles per hour up hill with no throttle. I sent it to a Harley Mechanic and they put a new fuel pump, regulator and filter in it to the tune of $357.00. I got it home today and it seemed to be running ok. I parked it and a couple of hours later I went out to go for a ride and about five miles into the ride it again acted like it was running out of gas. I got it home and parked it for an hour and went to start it again and it would not start. I can hear the fuel pump working and it got plenty of gas. Its not throwing any error codes and the engine light does not come on...Anyone got any ideas

Not to sound like a PR!CK, but if you paid the dealer to fix the bike and they didn't. I would take it back and have them do it right, or get a refund. If they refuse, and If you happened to pay by CC, I would dispute the charges. On the lighter side, most dealers will try to make it right.

Thumbs up

Hey thanks, and I have already talked to the mechanic in Phoenix, AZ that did the work and they are going to return my check to me as I am 200 miles from them. At the price of gasoline I am into more than the check amount. I really have a hard time with the dealership mechanic's and the real bad point about my current problem is that there is no trouble code showing. Thanks

The 03s have a known problem with the front injector wires "breaking". The harness is too short. There's a "bend" in the wire just as it's going into the connector. The wire won't be PHYSICALLY broke, but the wire in the insulation will be separated. Can cause LOTS of problems.

They should have known that... but plenty of shops don't (or he was a junior mechanic and didn't ask around?).

But that would be my guess. Don't know what skills you have... but it's just removal of the tank, and then splicing out the "bad" area. If you can't do it, mention this to the place you take it to.. have them eliminate that as a possibility. As a said, it's a 'known' issue.

Actually it sounds like you have multiple issues. First and foremost I am by no means of an expert but I have never heard of a 95 inch fuel download. Because of EPA rules and regulations vehicle manufacterers are extremely careful about what they will and wont do with EFI, mainly due to them having to meet the standards, so I am questioning this item.
Second if you are running a stock motor other then intake and exhaust your bike has got to be running extremely rich. How long have you had it? Have you fouled out any plugs? Getting poor gas mileage (i.e. 30ish mpg)?
When you say you went to a Harley Mechanic was he an independant or dealership?
I am going to catch flack for this one, but it looks like there is a dealer about 60 miles from Lake Havasu City take it in to them, tell them everything. They should be able to verify the download thing for one, and two if the injector wire thing really was a known issue they should take care of it. And three expect to put a race tuner on your bike, be it V&H Fuel Pak, PC III, TMax, etc, but do something that is tunable get away from "downloads" you will be much happier in the long run when you get all the bugs worked out.

I would look at two things. First check to make sure you don't have a hole in your fuel line inside the tank. If you open the tank and turn on the key and run switch listen for hissing noise. If you do hear one you have a leak. Second I would do a wiggle test on the injector wires as I had one break on me and it would run like crap at times. Im sure there are other thing to check but thats where I would start.
