same problem with mine (also an 06) turn radio off and hold two softkeys(any buttons) while turning it back on. see if it shows a diagnostic code mine gets one that says FL speaker open speakers seem fine, once in a while i can try it and it works great. dealer says 275 to have crap radio fixed. check out hogtunez or biketronics. 200$ for kit plus whatever you want to spend on radio then if radio craps out complete new replacement is 125$ +-. I'm ready to replace mine sometime soon let me know if you learn anything (dealer said to ckeck grounds under seat, one is for radio, all were fine )
Do you have a speaker switch located near the aux switch on the fairing? Both have a relationship with your radio. If the speaker switch is toggled the wrong way, it will cut out volume. Try both!
Speaker Open means the voice coil of the speaker cone has a break in it that will cause the speaker not to work. The best way to determin if the speakers are bad is to find an other speaker (even one from a home system will work) and hook it up temparialy to the HD Radio and see if it works. Or take a small batt. like a AA or 9V and hook the + and - to the speaker it should make the cone move out or in and make a poping sound. The stock HD speakers are junk my voice coil's broke with in the first year of use.
anyone on here able to fix the problem after having the FL Speaker open problem? My bike just did it to me this week, I also have a 06 Street Glide. I had just ordered new hogtunes speakers right before this happened so I hope replacing the speakers fixes this problem. Or did something else have to be done to fix it?
I am experiencing same problem on 06SG. Normally turning unit off then back on resolves the problem. Unit may play fine for 2 days or 2 minutes and the problem is getting tiresome. Considering changing to aftermarket unit but I have added the xm and hate to see that money go to waste - unless it can be used with an aftermarket unit???
06, 07, and early 08 models had weak fairing brackets that would vibrate way too much, an on occasion break. This vibration, especially if they are or were broken, is way too much for any radio to handle. In mid 08 there were new fairing brackets introduced that went a long way to eliminating this issue. Running an aftermarket unit under these conditions will result in another radio failure.
Iron Cross Audio can help with the diagnosis to determine if it may be vibration damage to the audio circuit. As part of the repair, an anti-vibration mod is installed to the circuit to prevent reoccurrance. .
I have an 08 Ultra. HK radio failed 3 times. Once repaired by Iron Cross. I gave up on HK. Installed Sony Marine from biketronics with Hog Tunes speakers. Sony sounds better and Hog Tunes Ultra Amp not needed. No longer have CB or intercom. Never used and tunes are needed for cross country road trips. I will never use Harley HK on this bike or future bikes. The Sony has an internal iPod. Sony very easy to install and control with Ultra handle controls. Great customer support from Biketronics.
That's what I was trying to confirm. Has Dr. V-Twin install JML 7-1/4 speakers and AMP on 07 StreetGlide. Sounded pretty good. But after a ride, when you turn the bike on you have no sound and have to turn the stereo and bike off then, start again to get it to work. They told me that due to the brackets design, the soldering on the circuit board gets damaged and I need to send the unit back to Harley to get the head unit re-soldered.
Has anyone else been told this?
When I got mine back from Iron Cross, they went over everything with me. The issue is not a bad solder joint, but damage to the main board caused by the vibration issues. When the HK went, I originally replaced it with a Sony marine unit. Sony crapped out in a few months (rain)...so much for marine grade. HK has been running fine for over 2 years after the ICA repair.
HD doesn't repair your HK; they'll sell you a refurb unit.
Call Tony at Iron Cross Audio; they have a superb reputation for quality work and customer service. They did some work on my HK a couple of years ago, and more recently added front and rear pre-amp outputs--ICA is the best.
Had the same problem on my '09 Ultra, still under extended warranty. The unit failed on a trip, I'd just had a Roadtech 665 Zumo installed before the trip. I lost all audio, even voice prompts from the Zumo, figured out I could rock the speaker position switch and get sound back for 2 days or 2 min. The dealer checked it out when I got back, told me it was the radio itself, and would be replaced under warranty....for the $50 deductible. Well replaced, and no more problems....I guess the HK's are known for this failure at about 21/2 years...right after the factory warranty expires....Sorry:spank:...WildBill

This is exactly what mine is doing guess I should feel lucky because it lasted a little over 3 years .. Oh well will see if extended warranty covers it ..
I have the same problem with my '07 Street Glide. I checked with Iron Cross Audio. The "batwing " brackets on your fairing are probably broken. They usually break, then the radio begins to vibrate too much and the amp shorts out. The result, no sound. I have installed some great repair brackets sold on ebay by Chopperdan0404. They were $44.00. Much cheaper than a new weak bracket set at Harley and with install cost about $280.00 at the dealer. This bracket is far stronger and installled in about 30 minutes at home. As for the no sound problem. I'm sending my radio to Iron Cross Audio. They repair the amp and install a stronger case housing for $250. This has to be done by mail. I took this route because I've added Xm upgrade to my radio and dont want to hassle with the swap to a new radio. Also want to keep the bike stock. I hope that helps. I will also post when my radio returns with repairs as to the outcome.

Got my radio back from Iron Cross. Thanks to everyone here for the recommendation. They did some outstanding work and had very fast turn-around.
Just to clear up some info. The broken fairing brackets (according to ICA) damages the main board. This damage will also occur if your riser bolts are hitting the bottom of the radio. I apparently had both of those issues. They did do a vibration modification, but that did not include installing a stronger case housing like mentioned here. It's an internal mod to stabilize the board. Also, they did nothing to the radios amp. I got concerned after reading this so I called them. The amp is apparently fine, it's the board that's the issue.
Just wanted to say thanks for info on iron cross audio. Just got my radio back ,but the light is not working after install. Has anybody replaced the light or should I just send back to iron cross audio.
It's not a light. it's a series of LCDs.
I would defiantly give them a call. There is a setting on the radios diagnostic menue that may get the light back
Sent Tony of Iron Cross a email Saturday night he responed early Sunday morning . Sending me a new radio Monday with a return slip for my no light radio . Thats how you do bussiness.
I started having all of those problems on my 09 FLHTCU coming back from a trip up to Coos Bay, Oregon. Stopped at a shop in Medesto . Guy came out looked at it & said he had one on the shelf & would relplace it right then (under warranty) but it was near the end of the day. When I got back to San Diego, I checked San Diego Harley, where I bought the bike & they wanted to charge a 1 hr "Analysis" fee. Then take it out, send it back & in a matter of weeks I'd be up & running.
That How "NOT TO DO BUSINESS"!. Now they have yet another pissed off customer, & by the time they handled the bike twice, that extra 1 hr, $95 fabricated charge would have netted them approx. nothing. I'll buy it myself & replace it myself before those R.B'sturds will see my money & tie up my bike just to bill another hour.
Quick Update. I just called SD Harley & spoke with the Service Manager (Jason) & explained to him what I was told earlier this week. He said there would be no "Analysis Charge" but protocal would require a quick inspection. Then he could call Warranty to get an Auth. #, & then the radio shop to have another unit sent to them along with an RA# to return the old unit. Then they'd let me know when it came in & do it all at once. That's a much better response than I got earlier. Plus it's 1 of the only 2 logical ways to handle the situation efficiently. (The other would be to "pretend" its a "PART" - much like a starter or a regulator - & keep one in inventory.)
I had a bad speaker swithch and rocked it back several times and the radio would start playing on outside speakers.. Can you hear your radio work in headset mode?
