Bank Angle Sensor
I have been chasing a problem on my bike for a good year or more now and think I finally found the problem. The bike is an 00' EGC and I had gone through everything looking for the problem. My bike dies when I ride it hard, especially when it is hot and lately temperature has not mattered. Today I took the BAS out and took it for a ride and ran it out to redline in 1st-3rd with no problems. If I got anywhere close to redline in the past, I had to turn everything off and restart the bike, sometimes I had to do it twice to get it to start.
The sensor is part # 32495-98 and sounds like a baby rattle if I shake it in any direction........not normal, correct? I have always thought the vibration from the higher rpms was what was doing it and now I think I am right........I just need to know what a new BAS sounds like when you shake it.........any one know?? They are around $55 so I want to make sure before I lay down the cash.

The bank angle sensor will rattle. It basically has 2 ramps on the inside and ball. The ball stays at the bottom of the 2 ramps as long as the bike doesn't pass a certain angle. Once the bike passes a certain angle the ball travels up on of the ramps and shuts the bike off.
The engine should not run without the bank angle sensor. It supplies an enable signal to the ECM or ignition module (depending on EFI or carb) allowing it to run.
Is it EFI or Carb? If EFI does it have a PCIII on it? And if so does it have Rev Extend?

It is EFI and it does run without the BAS, no PCIII....just stock.

Then the signal is low to run and goes high to disable the engine. If the BAS is bad and falsely giving a high signal it could do what you are suggesting. The rattle is still ok. To check the BAS you can apply 12v and ground from a battery across the power pins (check wiring diagram for pin out). Then using a volt meter with the positive probe on the 3rd pin of the BAS and the ground probe on the ground pin, you should read 5v when it is tripped and 0 volts when it is in normal position, IIRC.
Either way if it runs without it run it and see if your problem is solved, if it is you can replace the BAS.

Howdy Guys.
I had a "first time" shut down yesterday at normal cruising speed . (02 classic carb}.
Was thinking a fuel problem but is this "BAS" something that I should be checking out ?
It wouldn't re-fire immediately but finally did after some repeated cranking.

Were you in a turn or Vertical? Mine has done it both ways.

TSM - Turn Signal Module
TSSM -Turn Signal Security Module
On my Fatboy it is buried under the seat somewhere.

Question - When tripped?
Does anyone know what occurs when the sensor trips? Does it simply cut off power to the engine / fuel pump / ECM? Or does it kill all electrical power including lights, instruments, etc. I have a similar problem with my 02 Road King, but everything goes dead including lights, instruments, etc.? I can immediately turn the ignition switch to off and then back on and the bike will usually start right up. I have noticed that this situation almost aways occurs after running along hard, I then slow down to make a boulevard turn and ususally when pulling out of the turn, bam everything stops - goes dead!

May well be your BAS. When mine shut down I didn't lose lights. Do you have the security system?

Yes, I have the security system. The BAS is internal to the security system and turn system module.
