Powder Coating Forks??

I know most get the forks chromed and it looks good. Was thinking about getting the front end powder coated for a change. Local shop quoted me $250 to powder coat the fender skirt, lower legs and tins. He cannot match the stock black cherry pearl exactly but has something very close. Not sure about how the match will look? Is this a durable way to finish the forks? Looking for some input on this. Anyone done the forks this way? Thanks....

Shop around because powder coating is not that much work. I did my front end for $150 complete. It's black and your custom color would be more. But I would get some other price quotes. If you find a color you like get the powder number for it.

Glad you reposted over here too...cuz that other forum is such a technical nightmare and dropped my response to you.

I think you are being overcharged, unless that is the mark up for paint matching to your black cherry pearl. I paid about $100.00 for my front end components to be powdered black [on my 01 FLHT].

btw: if you do find a good matching color for the black cherry paint, could you list the manufacturers model # ? I've considered doing something along those lines on my roadglide as well.

It costs at least 4X as much to buy the MoCo's powdered parts....waste of money.

I agree that your quote seems pretty high, unless they are doing the teardown and installation for you for that.

I have an 07 FLHR Pearl White and just put black fork lowers on it recently. Far quicker to clean than chrome and powder is very durable.

Now to complicate your decision even further. Why not do your own? The link below has a kit that comes with 4 bottles of powder and each one is supposed to have enough material to coat 60 sqft. You need to have a dedicated oven as it leaves a residue and the wife will likely kill you if you use the one in the kitchen. Somehow I just don't see her objecting to getting an new one so you can have the old one. The Sunday paper is likley to have one for $50 also.

My point wasn't so much that he BUY from them... seemed like he was asking if anybody had done anything but chrome.

I was simply pointing out that it's common enough that the MoCo provides it.

But another counterpoint to "buying theirs" is unless you spend money on a spare set of lowers... taking yours off, to disassamble, to send to powder coater, to wait and then put back together... ain't happening in 1 day. More like several days you're out of commission. Maybe not a problem if a winter project, but it ain't winter right now.

Buying already done, saves a BUNCH of time.
