Electra Glide Standard or Street Glide?
I'm thinking of getting my first Touring bike and these are the two main bikes that I'm considering. Is the SG worth the extra $2K or should I save the money on an EG Standard and spend my $2K upgrading it myself? How's the HK radio on the SG? What other stuff do I get for that extra $2K? I'd be getting cruise, security and ABS on either of them from the factory. The color choices are very limited on the EG and also it looks like I have a wheel option on the SG. I guess the $2K saved if I get the EG can get my some nice wheels (after selling the originals), some more chrome, a nice stereo and some other goodies (Zanotti's plug here) like a GPS, etc.. I'd also be going with (at least) new pipes, Stage I and PCIII/SERT/Thundermax within the first 1K miles. With some good shopping/selling original stuff I could probably get all of that with the extra $2K.
Thanks for any input.

I picked up an '03 FLHT standard in '03 since the Street Glide wasn't available at that time and I've added the chrome engine package. ? about $1000 ? With the Street Glide your motor will be black and not silver, looks nice with the chrome engine package already on the SG stock, and the radio will be already installed.
? another $1000 ? The FLHT will have a touring seat and the FLHX will have a "sporty like" seat that is comfortable for around town, actually preferred by at least one person that swears by it.
I wish you luck in making your decision

how much do you want a radio? Are 3 lights up front ninstead of one important?
add up the cost of adding what is important on each bike and see what the cost is

Thanks for the replies,
Yeah I want a radio. I was wondering if the stock unit is good or for the savings can I get a better setup? Is it an easy drop-in install on either bike? I was planning on adding the extra two lights up front on the SG so that would make it even more expensive out of the gate. Also, I want to chrome the engine and front end. Which one comes with more chrome from the factory? The front fender on the SG looks a little bland compared to the EG. I'd have to do something there. I notice the seat height is higher on the EG? Why? Are they built on the same frame/chassis/wheel size? Is it the seat difference? I like the seat on the SG better but I realize I can change that out with my $2K savings for even a better seat. I wanted Black Pearl though and the EG doesn't offer that color. I guess I could go with Vivid Black since I'm not a big fan of the EG blue and red offerings. Vivid Black is going to be more of a PITA than Black Pearl to take care of but I can manage. The color thing is actually turning out to be the only thing holding me back on the EG. Everything else I want to do is pointing me to choosing the EG and upgrading it with my savings.
Dang, decisions, decisions. A hell, buying a new bike is still fun and I'm sure I'll be happy either way driving it home the first time.

Have you ridden a RG? Try it before you buy one of the others, Since you have already had a harley, maybe you have gotten over the "it doesn't look like a Harley" syndrome.
You might just be suprised with how much you like it.

The EG standard is a better "value" especially if you pick up an 07, but the SG IMHO is far cooler.

EG Standard is a great way to go. But I would say go with the EG Classic. For 1500 more (07) you get a whole lot, and the same ride as the Standard. I'm not a radio, nor a fairing kinda guy so the choice was simple for me - RK.

Thanks guys,
I'll checkout the Road Glide as well. I think I may hang on to the Deuce also (if my wife doesn't shoot me first) as my short tripper but I want all comfort and amenities in whichever Touring bike I get. I'm not big on the Tour-Pac container/backrest setup though. The saddlebags will be sufficient storage for me and I'll be riding solo 90% of the time.
Thanks again.

The topbox is nice, and will cost 1000 if you want it later. With the EGC it is easy to do a quick detach kit.

I'd recommend just getting the Ultra classic then you won't question if you should upgrade later. You can buy the tourpack quick remove kit and adapt the wiring. Then you'll have everything at a much better cost. If you tried to even come close to what the Ultra is, you'll be thousands over and it still won't be an ultra. It is amazing what the stereo is capable of alone, no wonder they cost so much.
This is from the past owner of a nice Eglide standard.
Also, even though the SG is the best looking Harley in my opinion, don't forget it has about 1.5" less suspension. If you ride two up this might matter.

If you really like the EG & SG look, buy a Road King (the greatest Harley ever made). Then buy an after market detachable fairing. That way, you can have the fairing on or off as you choose.

I like the Street Glide. Sleek, low, all the little things add up like the streamliner footpads, bullet turn signals, mp3 player, lowered rear suspension, 2 more gauges, 3 bar LED lights at the back. Just one bad a$$ looking scoot if that's the look you want.

The guy asks about SG or a standard and it's up to get an Ultra. Depends on how much you want the SG look. Can you make a standard look like a SG, you bet, but you are going spend a lot more than 2000 to get there. The radio and shocks alone will eat up that much. The std is a good bike but it's bare bones all depends on what you want. I've seen guys get a SG and put the spots on it and a tour pak, why not get a Classic But it's there choice.

I have just been through the same process. Difference in Australia between the SG/EG is US4000. I looked at the cost of buying all my parts to upgrade the EG to SG spec from Zanottis and it would have been cheaper to go with the EG. Deciding choice was colour- EG has only 3. I picked up a Demo SG and the price was not far off the EG.
One other thing- my 5 yr old daughter thinks that the SG is way COOLER than the EG and i must admit, the SG has more of the younger crowd type feel.

The handlebar setup, seat and height are all different on the SG. By far the better looking bike is the SG. I've been tearing myself apart on this same question. Street Glide...Road Glide or Ultra??? My lil' lady wants an Ultra, but I just can't get used to the setup. The Road Glide and Street Glide are my favs but she is not following my lead on this one!! I hate trying to talk anyone else but myself into things such as this, and it has become a real struggle.
