Ultra RB wants to know Dino or Syn?
What is a Digital Technician ...?

And why would a person need one to bleed the brakes on a 2008 Ultra? I take it this Digital Tech is only needed if the brakes are ABS? Non-ABS can still be bleed by us normal people?

Thanks

Hi

The HD Digital Technician is a military grade laptop HD "makes" dealers buy for about $10000 USD. It is the electronic interface between HD and each bike. It can go into the bikes ECM (computer) and determine what sensors are shot, as well as do Stage 1/Stage 2 down loads, program the radio /security etc. Seems like average guys can buy used DT off ebay but only dealers in good standing can get the newest uploads. Used ones can go out of date real fast....

I dont know why you would need to have DT to bleed brakes. I know my indy isnt happy bout it! Im looking at an 08 Ultra in Black Pearl WITHOUT abs

L8R eh......PEZ

Digital Tech

The non-abs setups will still bleed like a standard brake system. The digital tech is required to communicate with the abs system on the bike. Probably has to do with purging the air out of the pump in the abs control assembly. And yes Digital techs do get obsolete in a hurry and will become even more of a necessity as the bikes get more involved.

Thanks ...

Thanks for the info. I like hi-tech and I like the advancements but also I like to be able to work on my own bike ... and the more things go this way the more a guy will have to let the dealerships gouge you ...

I guess you can't have it both ways ...

Thanks again,
R

I guess they have to come up with the $10K somehow right?

I am like you on working on my own. I like that the old 99's depend on light flash patterns to decipher what has gone wrong with the bike, at least I can count to 20 (21 if need be) and look it up for myself as opposed to having the local dealer hook the bike to life support to just change the brake fluid.

Also, I read somewhere that the Harmon radios are having problems and need downloads? Dang, that stinks. I have an Ultra radio from the 99 year models in mine and when it went out I called Radiosound and they did a swap for $135. Not too bad if you consider the local HD guys charge $70 per hour for diagnosing things.

i don't know if the the abs systems on bikes are like some of the new cars but we use the scanner to activate the abs pump to bleed the systems to make sure all the air is out. this may be the same

The download is free and available at the H-D website. I burned it to a CD following instructions and then inserted the CD in the player on my Ultra, again following instructions, and got the update installed in a few minutes. No muss, no fuss. I understand the fix is free at a dealer.

I like to do my own work on my bike, gives me the experience and the knowledge. That said there are times I wouldn't mind getting the odd thing done at a dealer to build a relationship ... I wouldn't mind so much if they would just charge something reasonable for the work. Up here in Canada I think we get an even bigger screwing than you guys ... for instance to reflash my EFI when I changed pipes ... $250 ... and it took all of 15 minutes.

I don't begrudge anyone making a decent living but that seemed obscene. Same when my crank sensor went ... the local HD dealership wanted $135 for the part that had to be ordered (4 weeks apparenly as there were none in Canada) and $100 to put it in. I called a nearby US dealership and had the part overnighted to me ... $40 and I installed it myself in 20 minutes.

I'm sure the brake bleeding of the ABS with the dig tech will be the same ... prob $250 for 15 minutes work and $10 worth of fluid ... and while I wouild like the ABS system I will probably opt for the standard brakes so I don't have to be at their mercy, at least for that ...

Rant over ...

Digital Tech

Hmmm, I figured the Digital Tech was the newbie HD wrench that isn't qualified to work on an Evo, Shovel, Pan, Knuck, or Flathead motors!!! Shame...

My wife was a digital technician - she was a manicurist for a couple of years (bleach blond and chewing gum optional)
