Help! Clutch cable after ape install.

Installed mini apes and new braided cables. I followed the process - loosen cable all the way, pull lever a few times to seat lever correctly in clutch box, pull lever to handlebars, and begin tightening until lever moves away 1/8-1/4 of an inch. For reference, if it matters, I have the White Bros. easy clutch installed in the clutch box, but it was there before changing cables.
I can tighten the cable, basically screw it out as far as possible before it comes undone, and there is still too much slack. If I even set it in the middle portion of threads, clutch cable has 0 tension on it. It's almost as if the shroud surrounding the cable is either an inch too short, or cable itself is an inch too long! I though about putting a shim down where cable attached to clutch box, effectively lengthening the shroud, but that seems kind of hokey.
Anyone run into this or have a fix?

I had the same problem until I adjusted the clutch itself, not just the cable. There are several good write ups on the forums on how to do it. If you managed to install your own cables you can adjust your clutch.

Thanks d. I did adjust the clutch. Pulled the primary cover, loosened lock nut, adjusted until plates felt like they were touching, and backed off about 3/4 of a turn, tightened back up.
Didn't seem to effect clutch cable itself any??

Take out the easy clutch to eliminate that as your problem. Thats what i think it may be. I have had problems in the past with that easy clutch kit and S/S cables. If i remember correctly Barnett used to make a shim that went in the adjuster that essentialy made the jacket of the cable longer and gavemore adjustment. This may wok for you if they still make it. Otherwise ditch the easy clutch for testing porposes...

Taking out the ez clutch, not real ez... I'd have to drop the pipes, pull the cover, and of course I don't have the original ramp so I'd need to make a trip to the dealer. Might just work though - kind of a last resort.
I'll check with Barnett for the shim, hopefully they do still have them.
Thanks TXCHOP!

You didn't install a clutch cable intended for an 07 bike, did you? That would cause the problem you're describing.

The redesign of the 6-speed transmission means the cable changed. You can't use an pre-07 style cable in an 07 bike, nor vice-versa.

It's an 03 Road King.

I got her back on the road yesterday. I went back in on the primary side and readjusted the clutch again. This time I took it to the bare minimum adjustment, backing off basically a quarter turn from "lightly" seated.

Screwed the clutch cable back together. It's only holding on by about 1 to 2 turns on the thread, so basically I have no further adjustment to take up slack, but none the less, it's working fine.

Thanks for everyones help.

When you installed the new braided cable did you place the spacer back on the new cable? The spacer goes on the cable before you thread it into your cover. The spacer comes with the White Bros easy clutch and is required.
It really sounds like this is missing and would cause the extra slack you have.
