Two months ago I bought my first bike, an XL 1200C. Bike is great in many ways, and after putting 1800 miles in two months, I am very glad that I went with it. Real fun to ride and it'll get out of the way in a hurry. County roads with curves are the best.

At the 1000 mile service, I did the Stage 1 upgrade and went with the SEII slip ons and am very satisfied with the sound. It's got that nice deep rumble when I twist the throttle. Not loud enough to offend, but loud enough to be heard. But then again, if I absolutely .... positivly .... have to wake the neighbors, I can do that too.

Bought my bike from the Baton Rouge dealership. Great guys to do business with. Gave me a great deal and the service department is 1st class. The whole dealership is first class.

XL 1200C is the Custom, which is what I have.
XL 1200R is the Roadster

Drill out stocks

2006 XL1200c Myself and another guy with '05 1200C simply drilled out the stocks.
Equip yourself with a decent electric drill, and a hole saw to fit just inside the exhaust tip. You can actually do this with the pipes on the bike. Lubricate generously while drilling, and take your time. The hole saw needs to be the correct size to just cut the weld joint. If you get some flaring or jagged edges, you can sand/buff the area later.
All you need to do is drill through the weld at the tip radius, and the "baffle" will pull right out. No other changes; at worst, bike may run a little lean....you can address this if you feel you must. But, for the most part, back pressure is not being changed that much since you;re not messing with the head pipes.
Sounds to me, better than SE's (they're too quiet) The bikes I've seen and heard with Python slip ons seem better.
If you want stock back, the local HD dealer probably has a back room full of them for cheap. In our case, $10 !!

much better (IMHO) to drill only a half-inch hole in the baffle--nice sound yet retains back-pressure needed for low end torque

I core hole sawed out the baffles on my last bike, an '05 XL 1200 C. It made a deep thumpy sound but it was not that great overall and the performance suffered down low. I switched to SE Pro II pipes and I really liked them. Raspy, loud, lots of roar on the throttle. Gurgle, crackle, they made it all. I re-jetted and with the SE A/C it was pulling up the front wheel. Cycle Shacks sound similar on the 1200 C. Loud!

Right now I have SE II's, they sound good and perform real well. I used to have 1 3/4" drags. If you want ear drum-ripping LOUD, that's the way to go!
