Some Guy wants to know Dino or Syn?
74 sportster

Looking for a bit of input here. A guy has a running 74 sportster that's not in too bad of shape, considering, for $3000. I was kind of thinking it would make a nice project bike, and there aren't a whole lot of old bikes out here like there probably are in Los Angeles or some place like that.

Is 3k a reasonable price for a bike like this (nothing special added, running, paint not perfect or terrible) or are there lots of $1500 old sportys around? If I WANTED it, would it be good to jump on, or are there better deals around the corner?

Thanks in advance!

Well as you may know that bike was all of 2 grand new. The old news is the older Harleys that are so-so shape have gone up in value too. This is good for owners of older Harleys. Lately the cheepest Ive seen a bad shape Sporty go for is 2500. It would take that much to rebuild/repair the thing, more if one was to upgrade. IMO around hear a decent shape older Sporty that runs decent for 3 G's is a fairly good deal. Also check your H-D history, some types of older 60~70's Sportsters are rare and worth a bunch.

Thanks, I looked at the Kelley blue book, didn't have 1974, but did have 75, and numbers are between 2-3k, e-bay is all over the place... I didn't think about rarity, was just looking for something to tinker with (THAT goal should be easy enough to fill, LOL) but if it was rare, changing anything would be like carving your initials in a Ming vase, so other than reselling it, it wouldn't be a good bike for me.

Shop around for a '77 or '78. They got updated engine cases and the new transmission set up, but still have the old style frame with the straight rear fender struts and screw top oil tank.

Thanks for the tip! Right now I've got the pre-buyer anxiety of possibly letting a good deal pass by, but truthfully, I'm sure there'll be another coming down the pike soon. Some guys try and sell their bikes right before Winter, maybe I should just wait and see if it shows up in the paper again..

I guess the other thing I'm going to have to do is read up on it more before doing anything else.

I would really like to have a 74 at some point. Would be cool to have a bike that is as old as I am. I really need to get back stateside so I get into a resto project. I already have a 55 Plymouth sitting in my dads garage just waiting for my return.

Good luck with your purchase.

74 was the last year for the shifter on the right side. Not sure if thats something you would like or hate.
