Air Cleaner, Filter, Carb???

Hi everybody!

(Hi, Dr. Nick!)

I've got a 1998 1200 Sport that in another 6 months the bank will own no part of. So far, all I've done is replace the seat and throw on some bags. This winter/spring I'm finally getting around to replacing the exhaust and air cleaner, but I wanted to get some opinions from you fine folks, if I could.
I've searched this forum, www.sportster.org, and talked to a few local mechanics, and have heard different opinions everywhere. So I thought I'd see if I could get even more differing opinions.
I'm putting on the Hard Krome 2-1 Xcellerator exhaust, but I'm not sure what the best route is for the air intake. Some forums I've read say to go with the SE air cleaner, others seem to say just replace the stock filter with a K&N. One repair shop said the best thing to do was to go straight to an S&S carb instead, while the stealership tried to tell me that maybe I should just upgrade to a Dyna....
I know this topic has been somewhat beaten to death, but if anyone cares to share their input, I'd appreciate it.

For the price vs. performance, the SE aircleaner can't be beat.

Sportster.org says the Screaming Eagle flows the best of any intake for the Sportster. I think they know what they are talking about. I picked one up for my 02 883 Custom last Sept. I'll be installing it in the spring. Although I like the look of the S&S air cleaner setup.

later,

Go for the SE AC at first since it is the most cost efficiant/effective solution. If that does not suit your tastes then start looking for other solutions.

I agree with every one here, the S/E filter is all you need for what you're doing.
Your better off with the C/V carb, the S&S carb is a two circut fuel system and the C/V has three fuel circuts. The more circuts the better you can tune it for the best A/F ratio you need for your bike.

Nallin Racing Head Service is working on a new A/C for Sporties that will blow (pun intended) all the SE and Kuryakn stuff away. It is called the HurricaneFlow and will come with a 1", 2" or 3" K&N Filter (The SE A/C has a 1" filter). Tyey already have it available for the 04 and 05s. They should have them ready for the post 04's soon.

The 3"er will be offset a little foward to make room for your leg.

Check it out at http://www.nrhsperformance.com/newproducts.shtml
