I have a chance to trade up a little

My friend who is a Harley dealer had someone back out of buying an 04 883 Custom. It is bright red in color.

I purchased from him back in April a brilliant silver 04 883 standard XL which I have put over 4000 miles on.

Anyway, I was in the shop today and asked him about a trade for it and he will trade me for 1500 dollars difference plus tax and license.

I am severly tempted to do this. The only thing is I bought a Mustang wide vintage solo seat for my xl that will not fit the custom.

I am sure someone around here would buy it from me.

What do you think?

Personally, I like the custom's looks quite a bit better than the standard Sportster. You have to ask yourself which you like better though. 1500 doesn't seem unreasonable to me. However, is the tax on the total amount, or the 1500 difference. Cause you are talking another 600+ bucks for tax if for the full price, then another bit for the lic. fees.

$1,500...
With that money, what can you think you can do with your current Sporty, vs just getting forward controls and a fatter tank.. All nice things, but petty if you ask me.

I would take $1,500 and dump it in to going for a 1200 with the works (meaning re worked heads, jugs, pistons, 6 speed tranny). Now you have one fast Sportster.. And with the rest of the money, add foward controls, a new riser maybe and your set.

But then again, i am a person that loves speed.. Its the reason i got the 883, so i would not kill myself in the first 6 months so i can upgrade to a 1200 after i got the hang of everything =P

So you say he is a Friend . If he is a good Friend he would get you the same deal with a 2005 . If not I would put the $1500.00 in the bank for a rainy day.

I have stewed on this overnight and have decided to stick with my current ride. I already did have forward controls put on it when I bought the bike and also rejetted with screaming eagle air breather and removed baffles in pipes. It runs great.

I would trade for an 05 if he had one. The only reason I was considering the 04 is that he has it there now. He is about 6 months out on 05 bikes. He also told me yesterday that he has sold 80% of his 05 allotment of bikes already. He is one of those dealers who will not charge more then msrp.

Another thing, I am not sure I can put up with that BRIGHT red color.

Personally I think you made the right choose, In my opinion the first things that would need to be changed on the custom would be chrome cases $$$. The XL standard may not have chrome cases but at lest there some what polished, $1,500 can go a long ways in making your bike look even better.
