Installing Forward Controls on 883 Hugger

Hi all, first post in the Sportster forum. We just picked up my wife's first Harley yesterday from a private party, a 2002 883 Hugger. Great bike with a lot of add-on's already, but we're going to have to put on forward controls. My wife is 5'9 and she has a knee that has been through 4 major surgeries, so having the knee bent with the stock pegs will kill her after a while.

My question is how easy to install the forward pegs, since I've never had to install on my bikes (baggers)? The bike also has an engine/highway bar installed, so I know that means another part that needs to be added according to the HD forward control description. My wrenching abilities are average, so I'm not afraid of trying something new, just want to know what to expect.

I'd appreciate any input from all the other Sportster owners out there.

I put forward controls on both my wife's bike and mine (1200C). It's not a complex job, just a little time comsuming. You have to pull off the exhaust system in order to take off the right side case. Just follow the instructions that come with the controls and you should be OK. I don't know about the engine guard though. My wife's doesn't come near the forward controls and mounts to the down tubes above the horn and at the bottom. A simple install... Good luck.

If you have the 2 into 1 exhaust you can't add forward controls.

I'm 5'9" and had forward controls put on my 883 Sporty. That along with the Badlander seat that I have on there allow me to extend my legs pretty good. I don't know what kind of seat your wife has on her bike but this combo works well for me. Good luck!

This bike also has a Badlander seat, although I wasn't too impressed with it when riding the bike home after buying (about a 40 mile ride). I thought it was too hard and slippery. The wife is 5'8, so I think the forward controls and similar seat would do the triick. Thanks for the feedback.

That is why the STONES ROCK! I'm having "Dead Flowers" played at my funeral whenever I die (hopefully another 50 years or more).
