2001 Sportster 883 transmission oil

Hello all,
I'm sure this will be a no brainer stupid question to a lot of you. But, I have to ask anyway. How do you check / fill the trans oil on a 2001 xl883c? How much does it hold and what oil is recomended for it? Also I'm in Arizona and will be riding it when it is 115 degrees so if a heavier oil is in order please let me know.
Thanks,

MadCity is reading this now saying WTF is this?
I think I'm going to go synthetic

I'm seriously leaning toward using Syn3 when I hit my 1,000-mile service window. It's good for use in all three holes, which sounds convenient to me. Synthetics are about $5 a quart more, however, but proponents say they provide better protection and break down less quickly. But I'm not a gearhead; others may have strong feelings otherwise. You can do a search for Syn3 and find a bunch of threads about synthetics vs. petroleum-based lubes. Your owner's manual should show you how to add tranny fluid. Again, I'm not mechanically inclined and I'm going to let the H-D techs do the dirty work. I just want to ride.

Are you talking about the oil in the transmission or the primary fluid?

The transmission on the Sportster uses the engine oil to lubricate it.

The primary fluid is checked by removing the derby cover on the left side of the bike. The bike will have to be sitting straight up (not on the side stand) to check this fluid. Once this cover is off the level of the fluid should be at the bottom of the clutch basket - if fluid is needed then you can pour it in. Note: best to get a funnel with a flexible spout as it is hard to pour from a quart bottle and get it into the primary.

The fluid that the Sportster uses in the primary I believe is called the Sport Trans fluid.

As MadCity sad the SYN3 is an option and is more convient in that you use the same fluid for the engine oil as the primary case.

Thanks for the replies.
The sportster set up is just way different from what I am used to with my shovelhead.
Thanks again,

Mobil vtwin is about 7.50 a quart here in calif . I would say go with mobil . Harley gets enough of our hard earned money , besides they are the ones for the longest time who said not to use synthetic ... just my thought.
