Pics of my new 91 sportster

Hi All,

I'm one of those guys that always wanted a Harley, but never made it happen until now. A co-worker of my Father's (I'm 35) was planning to trade in his 1991 Sportster on a new bike, but when the dealer only offered him $2500 for it he decided against the trade. Instead, he sold it to my father for the trade in price, and now it's mine for the same.

The bike has 20k miles on it, and since I've never owned a Harley I'm curious about engine and transmission longevity. How long does the average engine last before a rebuild is necessary. It started out as an 883, but was converted to a 1200cc by the dealer at sometime in the past. My father is still waiting for the box full of stock parts, manuals, and documentation, so I don't know anything about the bike's history yet.

You can see more of the bike here: http://silvervette.com:81/harley/sportster.htm

Right now, I'm trying to figure out what's stock and what's been modified. Do you guys see anything non-stock in these pictures besides the air cleaner? Any mods you guys would recommend? I'd like to put a more modern handlebar on it like the current Sportsters run. Can I just get a stock handlebar off Ebay and install it?

Thanks!

Joe

Lightnin is an unknown quantity at this point
good deal. It looks about as stock as they come, even the pipes...with a few chrome bits and pieces added. I'm not sure if the 91 stock had the front turn signals on the forks or if they were relocated.

I agree with the handlebars....they gotta go. You could go to drag bars with a pullback riser for fairly cheap and you won't have to buy new cables or wiring.

Nice deal, also first year for the final drive belt. Off hand I see a few add on like the tool bag, chrome steering head bolt cover, oil cooler, Screamin Eagle air filter and breather, hand grips, chrome battery cover. The horn is not the original one that came on the 883, probably added, I'm not totally positive but I don't think that speedometer/tach combo and front turn signal mounts came on the 883's. The front fender is not the original for a'91.

Great info guys, thanks!

So you guys think the exhaust is stock? Most of the stock Sportsters I see have a crossover tube, so I figured these pipes had been changed. Anybody know if the '91 had the crossover?

A further search shows the speedo/tach combo stock, the pipes are not stock, should have a cross over. Only makes sense with the Air cleaner set up, it probably has different jetting also.

mr2fast4u is on a distinguished road
Thumbs up

Damn $2500.00

That is a sweet deal, I only gave $6400.00 for mine and I felt like I stole it at the time.

Looks great, be careful out there.
