After 25 years of raising a family I have returned to riding and finally got my Harley. My question is, When the weather turns cold at idle when I crack the throttle the bike carb coughs. Twice this happened starting into an intersection and scared the crap out of me. I drilled out the plug and turned out the idle mix screw an eighth of a turn and didnt seem to make it better or worse. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Ive been told it takes a long time to warm up I dont know if thats true or not just know i wont be riding the bike in cold weather.

Bump up your low speed jet one size. Cold temps make the air more dense, which will change your a/f ratio, making your bike run lean. Common issue around here, easy fix...also a lean bike will take longer to warm up.

It took me forever to get a Harley even though its just a sportster it means alot to me and i was getting really frustrated

No prob, carbs can be tricky until you get some experience with them.
