help please
I have 2 items I could use help with. First my wifes '08 1200 low sometimes will not idle down. It races at aprox 2000 rpm. Now I have found a p0505 error code and it also had a p0131 and p0151 error codes. I found out the 0131/0151 are lean readings on the O2's. Any ideas what to look for, since I believe the 0505 is the real culprit?
Also I once read about someone using the rubber mounts from the older sportsters on the '04 and up handlebar mounts. Any ideas what might be involved?
Thank you

MY first thought on the idle is a possible air leak. Use the WD40 method of checking for an intake leak.

First of all, is the wife waiting 3-5 seconds after starting the engine before moving the bike? If not, the bike will hold that fast idle until the bike stops moving for 3-5 seconds. On startup the fuel injection will rev to ~ 1500-1800. This will recede to normal idle range, 1000-1200, within 3-5 seconds if the bike is not moved.

When I read stuff like this, no offense intended to anyone, it kind of makes me glad my bike has a carb and a choke.

Do you have a tach on the bike?

Here's a summary from the Diagnostic Manual:
P0505 - Loss of idle speed control
Loss of idle speed control will result if the idle RPM is +-200 from preset idle speed and IAC motor is at zero or maximum for greater than 5 seconds.
- Loss of idle speed control is not an indicator that the IAC is bad. Other causes are intake leaks, misfiring cylinder.
- Leaking injectors could cause poor idle. To check for leaky injectors remove A/C, turn throttle wide open, turn key to ON for 2 seconds and then off for 2 seconds five consecutive times. Replace injectors if there is any evidence of raw fuel in the bores.
- Vacuum leaks
- Contaminated fuel
- Excessive Oil in crankcase
- TP sensor reading greater than 1 % (cable misadjusted), battery less then 9 Volts, or vehicle speed sensor (VSS) greater than 0 will disable idle speed control.
- Loss of battery power to terminal 31 of ECM.
This should give you a lot of things to look for. Also if the ECM loses power, the ECM will assume that the vehicle is stopped and adjust the idle air control to bring the idle up and set a code too. Let us know how it goes.

Ok, I think I need to explain a bit more. I had the dealer check for intake leak. And they ran diags too.
This only happens when we've been riding awhile and it's hot. Sometimes after a run down the freeway on a hot day too. When she pulls up beside me I hear the motor racing and if we just sit for about 15 seconds or so, it usually comes down to a normal idle.
It doesn't always kick an error code, which is wierd too.

Sounds Like Your Idle Control Sensor Is Sticking , Happens.... Get A Fuel Management System To Fix Your Lean Situation. It Ll Benefit You Later If You Decide To Do Any Engine Mods That Require Tuning.

There could be a few probalems
1.Is the bike being reved before it is warm and or is the bike getting moved before engine up to speed?
2.Wrong fuel?
3.Upgrades on exhuast or air cleaner may need to get a reflash or do a fuel magment setup.
4.O2 sensors are prone to going bad or was they reused on a new full exhaust(I know I work at a HD dealership).
Hope this helps

A member of the XL Forum had idle problems with his '07. Pulled off the ham can and found the intake manifold hadn't been bolted into place. Both bolts were missing.

I would try spraying the IAC pintel thing with throttle body cleaner- worked for me and it's cheap and easy-take off the ac and about a half inch in at the top ot the Tb is a 3/8 hole if you cycle the ignition switch you will see it move.

Fuel injection allows fine tuning, if you have the equipment. No screwdrivers needed.

Yeah, after you invest in some sort of fuel management system. Stock ecms only allow pre-set downloads. No tweaking allowed.
My carbed Sportster cost hundreds of dollars less than my FI TC88
to correct all the idle problems, lean condition and general driveability.
