Talking modded 883 coughing through carb

Hey all, new to the forums.

1986 883 evo, andrews v4 cams, not sure about the pipes. I bought it off of my buddy's dad who said he could never get the carb dialed in. Well, I got a little curious and took the carb apart, found out he was running jets that were WAY to big, it would break up at around quarter throttle then come back. Put in smaller pilot and main jets and it SCREAMS, just now it has the "sportster cough" worse than ever. There's a needle adjustment for the main jet, its a thumb screw through the botttom of the bowl, not sure what it's for. If I can get the help from you guys it will be mucho appreciated , I want this problem solved!

Here's a pic of the bike:

Continue to increase the pilot jet until it is gone, as it is too lean.
