Hey Sportster Guys...
A buddy of mine is bringing his Sporty over to my garage today and he wants my help in changing his oil. I haven't touched a Sportster since my 1975 AMF Ironhead. Where are they hiding the drain plugs these days and what's the capacity? Are the primary/tranny still one fluid? Need a little help here!
No, I don't have the "book" I don't own a Sportster. And no, my bud really doesn't know which end of a wrench to point at any particular bolt, so he's no help either!

Hey GG, there's a rubber hose with a plug and a hose clamp on it that comes from the oil tank near the rear of the trans, kinda dangles there like a lil willy. The 06 owners manual for an 06 states 3.6 qts on a 1200, 3.4 qts on a 883, 32 oz in the primary / trans, syn is good in all.

My '05's 1200's drain hose is in a frame clip attached to the underside of the frame. Slotted screwdriver for undoing the worm clamp on the end of the rubber hose. 3.6 quarts in the oilbag (but I always put in a lot less to avoid blow-back and have never experienced any adverse effects), 32 oz in the primary. Primary's drain plug is directly below the derby cover. My gaskets are rubber, some aren't. If you remove the derby cover for adjusting the clutch, torq specs are 84-108 in-lbs for the derby fastners.
See this tho..............
2004-2007 Sportster Oil Capacity
Service literature for 2004-2007 XL models incorrectly lists oil capacity as 3.6 quarts (3.4 liters).
The correct amount listed should be 2.8 quarts (2.65 liters).
Oil capacities listed are approximately the amount required to bring the fluid level near the full mark on the dipstick. Refer to the applicable service manual for the complete oil change procedure.
Service Note:
Be aware that the dipstick has a Full mark to indicate the highest level of oil that should be installed in a hot engine and an Add mark to indicate the lowest level of oil in a cold engine. The engine is designed to operate correctly with the oil level in the range between these two marks. While it is most important to not overfill the system, it is acceptable to operate the motorcycle with the oil level anywhere in the range between the Full and Add marks.

no, changing the oil in my 98 was nothing like changing the oil in my 68!
The 68 was logical and made sense. the 98 had a hose that connected to the frame...
